Hi, can anyone either frighten me or put my mind at rest.
I have noticed on my carbon hardtail that when I do a really tight turn, imagine you went too far up a trail and need to turn round and come back, that I am getting a lot of lateral movement on my front end. After a few test movements I notice that its possibly a combination of the tyre rolling (nobby nic) and the wheel or frame flexing(mavic 719 and on one whippet)
After noticing this I am now getting twitchy when out on the bike wondering if there is a problem, is it normal or is my frame or wheel about to collapse?
The only time I notice flex on any bike is if I'm riding along, get out of the saddle and really lean on each pedal stroke quite aggressively, as if I we're on a really steep climb. I certainly have never noticed flex due to steering. We you sure everything is tight and attached properly?
All seems to be fine , I wonder if its possible the tyre isn't suited to the rim size?
I would look at the wheels, are they tensioned correctly?
Maybe it's the forks? Could be the tires if you are running tubeless at low pressures but I wouldn't have thought they were too big for 719's.
Forks are rockshox SID World Cup 100mm travel, can't imagine they would be the issue but they are 2nd hand.
of course a carbon XC frame and SIDs with XC rims will flex.
you don't happen to be a liittle overweight as well do you?
Pump up your tyre a bit and see if the problem goes away? Then you would know if its the tyre or not. Having said that, SIDs are quite flexy - I had some and they weren't too solid. Then I bent them.
Anything upto the 2.25 nn will be fine in that rim, but will roll if you don't have enough pressure. Is that what you're feeling?
The one I rode felt pretty flexy ( frame) but it was an xl
Have you used the stem on other bikes too 😉
Wheel bearings?
I shan't take offence at the "are you overweight" quote, because I admit I am about a stone overweight.
So lightweight forks, lightweight frame and lightweight wheel...and then it flex's...
Tyre rolling sounds a bit weird. Is the bead moving around?
Matt, you seem to think that I was aware of all that information before I posted the question. It is possible that there are people out here who know very little about the intricacy of each individual part and might have just chucked together a frame with the parts they could afford. And then, god forbid, they ask a question on a forum which is full of people who have more knowledge than them in an effort to understand what is going on.
Pull your head in.
😕
TBH I have run 2.25 NN on Mavic 717 and they are acceptable in terms of flex but are very pressure dependent any lower than 32psi feels sloppy & higher than 38psi pings off everything!
I find my Ti456 a bit flexy when putting a bit of effort in but with the same kit my Ragley mmmBop won't twitch at all. Have a C456 that the Ti 456 is going to donate to 😀
John lighten up a bit Matt Outandabout is a nice bloke and I think your reading too much into his replys
loose spokes?
Sorry, I think the roof closure at Wimbledon tipped me over the edge.
Sorry Matt.
Roof closure haha! 'But he's been wanting the roof closed for the last forty minutes!!' 😉
Got a bit tense didn't it
John I thought my Ti 456 with full XTR was going to be the dogs danglys but the bargain mmmBop in one size too small fitted with parts bin kit has been the bike I choose over all others!
Hmmmm maybe consider a frame change at some point. I am struggling to trust the carbon from a strength point of view, I need to stop reading articles about how they can be easily damaged without you noticing. Other bike is steel and in my head it's indestructible.
