By *UK* I mean the likes of Cotic, Kinesis, On One, Genesis etc, bikes being designed and specified in the UK, for the UK, whether the frames are manufactured here or abroad.

Would be good to see a decent list. I'll be looking for a new frame before too long and will obviously (as a wannabe STW nichemeister) be steering clear of the big brands, preferring to use a UK based brand instead.

So other than those I've already mentioned, who is there?

Your going to base a purchasing decision based on where a product is made?

Orange? Probably moreso than most, given the in-house manufacturing

Not really, handmade in uk is out of budget, and most of the above manufacture in asia, as do all the big players.....

It was more about supporting British company, and the fact I'll only need a frame, not a whole bike. Plus it's nice to ride something that inspires you and is different to all the bikes you see on the street (cube full sussers on mud tyres being used as commuters......)

Just to play devils advocate, but I reckon someone like spesh or trek creates more uk jobs than most of those niche British brands combined 🙂

I think he was basing it on who its made for "bikes being designed and specified in the UK, for the UK" no not where its made " whether the frames are manufactured here or abroad"

Before the uk brands appeared / matured british riders had a bit of a preference for canadian brands - bikes not designed in california for sunny dusty trails. Whether its the weather or other reasons there are trends in UK riding - like long travel hard tails and UK riders were early adopters of disks - that aren't as well catered for in other markets

Cotic, Genesis and other UK builders use a lot of Reynolds tubing, much of which is made in good old Brum before being shipped to Taiwan for assembly and painting.

Yep the UK is a special place that is very different to the rest of the world 🙂 In modern times most frames will be suited to UK riding.
The other one to consider is Hand Made is no measure of quality.

I thought this was a general UK brand thread, not necessarily manufactured here?

does that mean you just need a head office/figure head somewhere?

Well the OP mentioned Kinesis, so that pretty much defines the thread imo.

I guess it means you should also include Pinnacle and maybe (haven't looked it up) the Edingurgh Bike Co-op brand Revolution.

For parts, it would therefore also include Choctopron - or at least the stuff he's designed himself as opposed to just rebranding.

There's quite a lot of design in the UK but not so much manufacturing:

I have a Kinesis which says - "designed in the UK" and a Moda that says "Designed and built in the UK"
AFAIK - Whyte, Genesis, design here and manufacture overseas. Moda do most overseas and only some manufacturing here. Only Pashly remain as an entire design and manufacture brand in the UK. I would be happy to be corrected.
