Gonna make the leap on one of my bikes to 1x and just wanna take a poll please of what people have.
Just type numbers, put a short explanation if you want to.
Ta!

28 front 42 rear put on for Alps trip last year and can't be bothered to keep swapping and changing.
32 on the 1x11
34 on the SS
OH has 30 on 1x11
32 on my full suss, 34 on my hardtail.
Both have 10spd 11-42 cassettes and 26" wheels.
30t chainring with a 10/42 cassette. Sram GX 11 speed.
Enduro bike weighing around 32lbs. Mostly ride trail centres and uplift days. Gives me a bail out gear for steep stuff and has plenty of go at the fast end.
42 on cx single
36 on the single solaris
32 on the ss
This question is useless without the wheelsize and cassette size as that will change things.
It's gonna to be on a 10 speed 26" Soul. Cassette ratio as yet undecided. The bike will be a pure trail bike, technical wild stuff and trail centres....well Cannock!
On my hartail 29er I have an oval 30T with 11-46, on Jeffsy I have a 34T round with the 10-50 Eagle.
32 on a 29er - ok on Surrey hills and occasionally Wales.
34F x 11-42R xt
Going from a 2x9 24/36 x 11-36 I have found this ideal and no problem at all on the ups. If anything I still spin out occasionally on easy downs
32 hardtail
32 full suss
30 fatbike
32 teeth on a not-quite-round ring at the front, with 11-50 di2 shifted teeth at the back 😉

32 coupled with a 11/42 rear.
If it was starting afresh I’d go 34 with a 11/46 rear.
Rather than guess, spend 30 mins with the sheldon Brown calculator, find a gear on your current set-up you consider to be the lowest you could live with, there’s a lot of “getting used to” wiggle room IME but still. Calculate what that gear is with a 42 or 46 rear and that will give you your answer.
PS - 30t rings look weird.
On my traily 26" 10s 32t oval 11-36 is ideal range:weight for me.
30T 10spd 11-40 Switchback
32T 9spd 11-34 Xc bike
32 / 11-36 / 26" 456
Ride Peak, Dales, Moors, occasional Snowdonia and Lakes and the odd trail centre. Get up most stuff and I don't reckon I'd get up *that* much more with an easier gear.
30 (26 or 27.5 wheels)
32 Oval 29'er 11-36
34 or 32 x10 650b 11-36
34 x11 650b 11-40

11-36 cassette (on fat wheels)
30T 11-34 9 speed on 26" HT
30T 11-46 11 speed on 27.5" FS
42 on my commuter 11 - 36 cassette
32 oval on my 29er hardtail 11-40 cassette
28 oval on my fatbike 11-40 cassette
The 29er FS frame I'm building up will have 32 oval with 11-42 cassette
34 on t130
36 on Parkwood
30 front 10/42 rear on a 27.5 FS
I had a 32t oval on there but changed it for the alps and quite like it now.
28
That was all that was available.
30 full sus
30 oval fat bike
32 singlespeed
26 on both 29+ and fatbike - I like to spin, plus have a habit of popping out for a ride longer than most. After 20hr+ it's the difference between walking and riding
34T previously with sram 11 speed and left it the same for the eagle setup I now have.
32 - 29er e-trail bike
32 - 27.5 trail bike
30 - 29er HT/26" fatbike depending on wheels fitted
30 - 29er XC bike
30 - 27.5 enduro gnarpoon
All 11s 10-42, apart from the XC bike which is 12s 10-50
24 on my solaris.

32 10-42 1x11 650b full sus (oval)

32t with 11-42t rear on 29er XC FS & HT
38t with 11-32t rear on CX bike
26T oval
34t with a 10 speed 36t cassette on both bikes.
Gets me round most places. Can struggle a bit on long days out but mostly fine

34T front with 11-36T 10spd cassette.
Gets up everything round my way which is SDW stuff.
28 10-42
30 11-46
Both as supplied.
32 42:11 29" wheels
Ride in the lakes, does the job.
38T on 130 BCD. Running 11-32 cross and 11-23 road. A 10-21 would be nice 🙂
34 on a 29er Hardtail with 11-42 cassette.
32 Oval ..married to 11-47 cassette..
28t on a 29er..........with a 15t on the back.
29er HT, I have a 32 front and using a 36/11 10sp block as it was cheap when building the bike, I find that anything I can't ride is stuff that everyone else pushes their bike up
34 on an Eagle drivetrain
Average ride is around 25-40km with approx. 1000 metres of climbing.
32t oval with 11-42t 10sp on Nukeproof Mega TR 26" wheel.
Have found this a bit easier and less work than the previous 2x with 36/24t & 11-36t as always felt I wanted to be between ratios.
Oh and mainly use it round Cannock.
36 x 20 Oval SS 29er so that I can then go
36 x 16 Rohloff 29er when needs be.
28t chainring
11-42 cassette
650b wheels
30t chainring on BCD 104 crank with a 10/42 cassette. Sram GX 11 speed
This compares two gear setupsquite nicely.
31.5, I really must change it!
34T 1x11 (10-42)
36T 1x12 (10-50)
both 650b
Average 2-3 hour rides with 600-1000 meters climbing
34 with a 11-30 road cassette on my carbon hard tail
30 with 12-34 on steel hardtail mud plugger
(Looking at the posts above I must like pushing big gears or something!)
One note of caution - I find that 30t rings seem to wear very quickly -
tried 32t, no top end 11t
went up to 36t, top end bearable, but the 32t cassette made steep/slippy/techy climbing too much hard work.
did it for 6mths, but now back on a 2x setup, rather that than a silly cassette
edit: 26", 9spd, bit of everything offroad bike.
32 wonky x 18 = single speed
34 x 11-42 = Hardcore ("You know the score,Rhymes so quick I deserve an award...") Hardtail.
Both 29er cos big weelz rool.
DrP
32 on my 27.5 bike
34 on my 26er, and the wife's
32 because 16 is too low and 64 too high - and a number which isn't a power of two would frankly be downright weird.
30x36, 26" for local (Notts) trails
30x42, 27.5" for Peaks, Lakes etc
32x32, 26" for winter/papershop bike
32 via 11-42 cassette for harder XC racing (steep courses)
34 via 11-42 cassette for all other off-road times
34 via 10-42 cassette for my road wheel
All on a Scalpel Carbon (FS) XC bike (22 lbs)
34t with 50-10 on 29er big bike
34t with 42-10 on 29er trail bike
34t with 24-11 on pump track bike
30 on a 2011 mega with a 11-42 speed cassette. I could probably go to 32 if i wanted as i've got fitter via road riding, however 30 has been fine around the UK, the alps and romania.
32 NW Hope on the front with a 36/12 rear cassette on my old 9 and then 10 speed, 26" Heckler. I ride all over as you know and it suited me just fine.
Now on 650b, 11spd with a 32 Oval and 10/42 rear cassette
Be careful with larger sizes, you can't always get them far enough over for a decent chain line. Just about to replace my 34t oval with a 32t round as the chain line can't cope with any mud.
30 11-40 29er hardtail
34 11-42 27.5 gnarpoon
Getting ready replacement so might go 34 11-46 on both. Lakes based
32 oval jobbie. I read it means you get the equivalent of 34 at the wide part, so thought it ideal compromise.
Usually 34T x 11-46, 11sp (650b)
But recently had to run 36T ring for 3 days in FoD & BPW and did find some climbs tough.
Previously had an oval ring, and liked the pedaling characteristics but then I snapped a mech off in really remote valley in the Peaks.
Because of the oval chainring I couldn't do the usual trick and make the bike a single speed.
The subsequent 12 mile hike/roll/hike/roll in carbon soled shoes made me swear off ovals forever!

Hmm ....POSTED 39 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST
Just testing......
30 x 11-36, both full sus and hardtail; both 26ers. Does for the Surrey Hills nicely
32 oval. For me seems best compromise with an 11-40 cassette for all UK riding.
Because of the oval chainring I couldn't do the usual trick and make the bike a single speed.
You should still be able to do it. Plenty run ovals on singlespeeds. Not saying it would be nice but do able yes.
