Trek is back at the LBS having a new motor fitted after 4 months and 350 miles use. That’s fine, the Bosch warranty covers it, but my rear hub is also FUBAR; bearings have probably gone and the freehub isn’t too healthy either. Is this normal wear and tear given the time of year?

Pretty normal on an Ebike, putting a cheap hub on a bike with high torque of a motor + the winter we've had will wear stuff fast. Surprised your chain/cassette isn't worn too. Also check chairing.

Between 1cm and 1m.  Outside of this range, string is known by different terms but I've forgotten what they are (thread and spool I think).
