How long to look for a stolen bike?

Hi,

My bike got nicked last January. I'm still looking on eBay, pink bike and gumtree occasionally for it.

At what point do you give up looking?

I assume its been sold to someone and they are riding it, or it's been broken for parts.

I have been looking assuming the new owner wouldn't realise it's been stolen and might list it.

Is it time to move on and give up searching? I might spent 10 min a week. It's not an all consuming task.

I found one after maybe 10 days on FB marketplace.  Alerted the Police and got it back.  Miraculous. Insurance told me to "dispose of it" as they had already paid out.  They were genuinely shocked I had found it.

I still have alerts for the other on eBay but rarely look at them.

What would you do if you did see it up for sale?

And would you really want it back after it's been used and abused by someone else for over a year?

I stumbled totally by chance my dads bike being sold on Gumtree 8 years later. Never did get it back though.

If insurance had paid out for it I'd not be looking. Even if insurance wasn't involved I doubt I'd be looking, mainly because this:

What would you do if you did see it up for sale?

I've no idea what I'd do if I did spot a bike I knew had been stolen from me. I don't own any Bombers.

Every time I see a scally on a bike in Sheffield (about every 90 seconds) I always check to see if it's one of mine.

2 bikes nicked nearly 2 years ago.

Can't help it.

I'm hoping for this. A mate got his recovered by Derbyshire police about a year after it was taken.

I don’t own any Bombers.

I did, some lovely coil sprung z1 anniversaries. Unfortunately they are on that bike.

And would you really want it back after it’s been used and abused by someone else for over a year?

Yes. I would love it back.

The child seat on that make it quite distinctive so should be easy to spot in any listings...

It had a kids ride shotgun on the front by the time it was nicked.

Still distinctive 😉

The other thing to consider is that even if the bike was stolen the person listing it might legally own it.  Scenario being police recover a stolen bike but can't trace the owner. After a certain amount of time they are allowed to auction it. I am fairly sure the new owner will have full ownership regardless of whether the former owner sees it being sold.

What would the situation be if the insurance has paid out and then you find the stolen bike? If the Police are alerted and then recover the bike do they give it back to you? And if so then where do you stand with the insurance, assuming they've just given you a wad of cash then they'd want it back?

In the world of insurance claims, bikes values are small beer, so sure you have to tell them but generally it's too much hassle for them to do anything with it so now you have 2 bikes.

I had two bikes nicked out the garage about 5 or 6 yrs ago, the better one popped up on fb market place about a year ago in Darlington, (I live in Hartlepool, about 20 miles away) It was a liteville 301, so not many about, it has been sprayed orange over the original black.

I messaged the ‘seller’ to enquire if it was still available, but he never got back to me surprisingly, but as Simon said (!) I didn’t really want it back after all that!

What Sharkeattack said, whenever I see a scrote on a bike. Other half thinks I'm a bit weird with a somewhat strange interest o Scrotes on bikes..

Saw mine on FB Market place after 18 months. Police were shit, got it back.

Title belongs to you if they bought it from anyone, they didn't have title, so couldn't sell the title. Their loss. If they bought it from Police Auction do the Police have powers to take title? Not sure if that has been tested.. I'll ask my barrister mate..

Interested in your barrister s opinion. Point him towards this.

"Any disposal of property under sections 68 or 70 of this Act to a person taking in good faith shall, subject to subsection (2) below, vest the ownership of the property in that person."

Well I guess they can then.

The ill-informed trainee solicitor tried to make me think he had title of my bike. I had to correct him and remind him that having a handling stolen goods badge wasn’t going to help his chosen career.

I would suggest it’s not worth the mental emotional stress of continually looking for it

Also if you see your bike being ridden by a scrote what realistically are you going to  do? Risk trying to get it yourself and at best getting punched or at worst getting stabbed? Tell the stretched police who have got better things to be doing ?

Its wrong but have to let it go

Mine turned up on Facebook Marketplace 7 years after it was stolen, still had my brand new XT trail clips fitted and my Garmin mount. A mate alerted me to the ad but it had already sold. I managed to track down the buyer and bought it back for £50, without my pedals as he had sadly already flogged those for £70. Never did get to ride the XT trail clips...

I’ve largely given up on ever seeing my ‘98 Kona Stinky again, but still hold out hope for an 05 Demo 8, stolen in 2008, from Whistler.

I spent a good month or so looking for my bike but it never showed up. There's probably someone still riding around Northampton on it.
