[Closed] How long can let BB30 bearings sit around for? Any cheap BB30 press alternatives?

Hi,

Any (bike) advice appreciated!

Bike has been sitting for 4 years and was wondering does the BB30 grease need replacing?
Can I do it without removing the bearing?

Will take the crank off and check.
I don't have a press but isn't £100 for a park press really that great?
I used a G-clamp on my car suspension which replaced the wheel bearing...

Thanks folks!

You can get the seals off without taking the bearings out, just use a blade to pop them off. i use a headset press with the old bearings mounted on as drifts to get the new bearings in. Sometimes i have to tap the old bearings lightly with a punch to dislodge them after as they have a habit of following the new bearings into the hole!

As above, pop the seals off once you've taken the cranks off.

If they need replacing, then I use the cheapest of the cheap off ebay, and pop the seal and cram with grease before fitting. Old bearings out with a screwdriver and hammer, new bearings in with a g clamp and drift of some sort will be fine.

I have two bikes with bb30. I've only had to replace the bearings in one when I bought the frame (used). Other than packing both with grease initially I've never had a problem with them. One is three years old and the other is getting on for two.

Thank you for the advice Neil the wheel and CP!

I will take the cranks off and check the condition of the bearings by hand and try to remove the seals carefully and repack the grease without taking the bearings out of the frame.

Although with the right tools it is not too hard to press new bearings in.

I had been planning to make a press out of a length of threaded rod, two big washers and the £10 FSA press kit.

As it happens the creak I was trying to address has since moved to another part of the bike so no need...

I've looked at making one from a Screw fix threaded bar and nuts.

If it doesn't work well, I'll order a head press that fits BB and I've ordered that Park BB30.3 hammer tool with the cups.

Just ordered some BB30 bearings from CRC in case the strip procedure (Saturday) results in rusty bearings etc.

Check the creak isn't loose chain-rings too.

I've had a Shimano XT cartridge creak until I swapped for HT2 a decade ago. Definitely prefer BB30 with replaceable bearings.
