I was giving my old mans Triban a service yesterday and noticed he needed new tyres, no problem thinks I, he can have the 28mm Gatorskins I have lying around. Now they fit in the frame and forks but only just. The front has maybe 1mm between the tyre and the brake, it's so close that the nobs you get on a new tyre brush the brake caliper. The rear is not quite that tight not not much more. Is that too close? Am I pushing my luck and should just buy him a pair of tyres that properly fit?
sounds perfect to me..
As long as the tyres doesn't deflect into the stays under load you are good.
and he doesnt snap a spoke and buckle the wheel, seems a very close tolerance, may lock the wheels up/
It's not one of these brakes that go closer to the tyre when operated is it? I've got one like that, ok in normal use but with raceblades fitted it pushes the mudguard onto the tyre when you pull the brake, but spins freely otherwise. Guess you've already checked this, but just in case!
Looked at it again this morning, too tight I think, he'll have to make do with 25mm Schwalbe Blizzards instead.
