How fast could a bike and rider do a standing 1/4 mile?

Went to Santa Pod yesterday for the Main Event - usual awesomeness with the top fuel cars, jet cars and all the other classes.  Got me wondering what time could a rider do over the 1/4 mile?  Has anyone ever tried it?

On a prepped track? About 15 minutes I reckon.. 🤣 #glue

Apparently there was actually a 1/4 mile track event at the 1904 Olympics - fastest time was about 32s.

I’d need a calendar, rather than a clock

Fillipo Ganna has the current record for 250m at 16.95 seconds. That's a bit short of 1/4 mile, which is 400m but considering he'd not need to much more acceleration, presumably you'd be 22 or 23 seconds.

Yes, 22 seconds would be about right as the Kilo record is 55 seconds so 0.4 x 55 = 22

Surely there must be dozens of track sprinters capable of better - probably even with a fixed (huge) gear

I wonder if the Pod would allow an event for us in their off season?  The track treatment would have gone off and could always run outside of the sticky bit 🙂

Saw this rocket bike yesterday - runs on steam!  Only enough capacity for 1.9 seconds of thrust but an amazing thing...

Maybe, but as per my post the kilo record holder (Jeffrey Hoogland) would be around 22 seconds as well as they will be up to full speed at 400m with the remaining 600m at a fairly constant speed.

I’d go with a sub 20s. The first lap is slower, and it’s not as long so can go harder; and this is 150m plus a full lap. Hoogerland has a 3kw start and presses 650 kilos in the gym.
