Getting older worked for me. Shorts barely fit around my waist now let alone slide down 😀

(good-fitting shorts with belt loops is the answer - adjust as necessary)

Au contraire, get a waist, then your hips will give them something to hang on.

Get ones that fit. Do up the velcro waistband adjusters.

Simple answer, this. I've just got a pair of the new pre-production Blackline shorts and they're superb. Not just a bit of adjustment on the waist, LOADS of adjustment on the waist AND a ratchet style belt buckle that lets you do your shorts up nice and tight but won't slip like fabric webbing/plastic tab type belts sometimes do.

Braces!

Yeah, I wear braces a lot when cycling as I wear mostly cut-down jeans or baggies. It's important though, if not wearing a base layer, to clip the braces strategically so that they don't rub against the nipples. I remove the metal adjustable buckles and replace them with a few cotton stitches.

I very rarely wear lycra but would consider doing so in very wet weather, in which case wearing anything on top of them defeats the purpose of avoiding wet baggy shorts.

Ditch the lycra and get liner shorts/bibs instead, much easier for the baggiest to hold onto

Also a fan of braces. I wrote "enduro" on mine in yellow paint marker which makes them 1000% awesome and no longer something an OAP would wear to suspend his kecks.

Ummmmm, the liners/bibs are likely lycra....

Simple answer is to get the correct size.

The only reason I wear baggies is so I’ve got a pocket for my phone - not for socials but so I can whip it out to take a picture or use the birdsong ID app. They are so impractical for ATB, they get snagged on the saddle and flap in the wind. If anyone can recommend a backpack with decent, reachable pocket then I’d go full 90’s lycra again!

Why not a jersey pocket?

If it's just a phone pocket you're using them for and you want instant access, buy a phone-sized top tube bag. As a bonus, also good for jelly babies.

Fat Lad at the Back MTB shorts/trousers. Have a big elasticated band like maternity wear. Looks popping but annoyingly effective.

They are a little short in the leg though.

Can I interest you in Endura shorts? Or, given your focus on correct sizing... perhaps not

Not all liners are the same. I've generally been fine, but one pair had big, shiny lycra, panels and they were noticeably worse (just couldn't wear them in the wet) for holding up baggies than any of the others I've had.

there is probably something in this. I've just turned 60, and am a fairly square ex prop shape, 6 foot, 36 / 38 inch waist, 46 chest, about 15 stone / 96 kg. i swim about 10 km a week, try to ride 3 or 4 times, and do some weights and pilates. Could lose a few kg but not really got a belly, but suspect body shape is changing!

These braces won’t unclip unexpectedly as they’re designed to attach to your belt.

liner shorts/bibs instead

Is there any advantage to the ones where the baggies clip/buckle onto the liners? Think Endura used to do?

I find that Decathlon braces, which are designed "to keep any trousers on your waist" work very well

I've always found baggies over Lycra bib shorts slipping a pain to, I could switch to liner shorts or at least non-bibs but they're not as comfy (and I've been on too many group rides where I get more of a view of someone who's wearing waist shorts ass crack than I want). I notice some brands had baggies with internal waist silicon gripper dots which seemed a good idea but are rare (I guess could add my own but no clue what glue would stand up to repeated washing)

Been a while since I've tried them, but the Endura ones never worked for me. If the shorts were in the right place then the crotch of the liner was always too low YMMV

So as not to look like a sex offender when you get off your bike? no way would I leave the house in just Lycra. I’d look like a burst black pudding 😃

For years I’ve always used Endura Singletrack or Humvee shorts with the click-fast liner. They’ve always worked for me. They come with a canvas clip belt as well. It could be my massive fat arse holding everything up though. Who knows? Maybe it’s a combination of the two

Yeah but why the need to pamper your arse with padding? Unless it is an exceptionally long ride I wouldn't consider wearing lycra under baggies, it is  unhygienic and, imo, uncomfortable. Although I get the impression that some people's arses are more sensitive than others, so maybe I'm just lucky.

Hey… Someone asked the question, I’m just giving you my answer. It’s just a matter of personal preference, in this case… acceptable attire to leave the house in. And this is a thread about wearing baggies over Lycra, so, you know…

All our rides finish at the pub (them ‘s the rules) and if you’re happy sat with a pint, in a public space, in an outfit that screams ‘EVERYONE LOOK AT MY FUN-SIZED MARS BAR!’, then good for you. I’m all for empowerment, it’s just not for me (see above ‘burst black pudding’ comment).

Would sir be going ‘commando’? 😳

My arse is indeed amply padded Ernesto, but I’m a northern softee so I require more 😃

@wheelsonfire1 Do you not wear a cycling jersey or jacket with multiple rear pockets, one of which could be used to stash your mobile? My mobile comes out with me most rides, mainly so live tracking can show better half where I am on my ride, stashed alone in my leftmost rear pocket.

I wear a backpack with hydration bladder, spare clothing, monocular, tube and tools. If it’s a long ride I’ll have sandwiches and a flask…. If I was on my road bike I would be able to use jersey pockets but then I wouldn’t be wearing baggies!

I’ve just invested in some Rapha Trail light shorts which were still expensive with 40% off !

They are bloody good though. A big elastic band about 3” wide sits on your lower back attached to adjustable tightening straps on left and right hips means you can get a tight fit but still with some give

To the op, braces would be more confutable than a belt on a bike.

to Ernie , what is unhygienic about lycra under your baggies? Is it the chammy? I have a friend who wears saxx (spelling could be wrong) undies while he’s riding. Do you do something similar or go commando?

No it's not a choice of lycra or commando 😂

None of my underwear is made of lycra! I wear normal cotton underwear. I don't need padding unless my bike ride is significantly more than 50 miles and these days long bike rides no longer appeal to me.

Cotton is much more hygienic than man-made materials which create bacteria friendly environment. I do wear lycra tops though. And as I said earlier I would consider wearing lycra shorts in very wet weather. Or full length thermals in very cold weather.

This year I have discovered that losing weight so that my waist is narrower than my hips/legs has made a huge difference as I can tighten up the waist adjusters and they can’t fall down. Also rarely wear Lycra under my shorts/trousers as I don’t like the feel of a chamois

Not 100% sure - they had 2 of each size made for riders to give initial feedback (they're ace - best shorts I've used). Best ping Alex @ Blackline a mail and ask. They'll worth waiting for (no association, just a happy customer - their jerseys are ace too).

How about those silicon gel strips that are used to stop lycra shorts riding up / leg warmers slipping down?

Add some vertically to the sides / back of the lycra shorts and another set horizontally on the inner waist band of the shorts.

If anyone's tried this whether for shorts or similar to stop cycling jerseys riding up, some feedback would be good.

Been using braces for years, as MTB short's belts are really crap. Was happy using Oregon black logger chainsaw braces, as other ones I've used just rust or stretch, but I like the look of those decathlon ones. The oregon braces jaws (you could sew in buttons for the other strap version) are a bit sharp, but I've not done significant damage to any of my shorts using them

I also added belt loops to a pair of Madison riding trousers after losing 10kg (couldn’t afford smaller trousers at the time) and wore an Arcade elasticated belt to hold them up. This worked really well

Oakley have a silicon gripper in the internal waistband of some models (at least an old pair of Arroyo's I have do) but I guess it's a fairly niche requirement so not many manufacturers bother

Fit, weight, and design?

Braces work very well as folks have described.

I find my slightly less baggy Endura 3/4 baggies slide down more than my much baggier Hummvee zip-offs’ shorts. Maybe due to drag on the over-the-knee bit?

the 7Mesh glide path shorts I got a few weeks back don’t really slide down over a pair of Lycra shorts. No silicone grippers, but the waist adjuster and cut of the waist/hip band seems to position them really well. What with the great pocket design and slight stretch in the material these are great.

Endura clip in liners seem to crawl down with the shorts. Plus clipping them in is a pain. And most significant: for me they are the most uncomfortable padded shorts I’ve ever worn.

I went to a zwift do in Bristol, free beer and pizza straight after work and tbh I reckon everyone turned up in Lycra 🙂

Oddly in Spain we have Jeanstrack riding Jean shorts which are really nice, elastic and good hip adjusters.

I run my baggies with a wide nylon webbing belt. Not the feeble spaghetti things that come with them and outdoor trousers but a wide one with a pull through and clamp buckle.

I think it's actually these ones.

https://amzn.eu/d/56uGVSR

I have a set of clip in liner Endura Humvees and I'm more likely to wear a pair of decent bibs under them or boxers as the liner doesn't quite seem to be in the right place relative to the short. It's not just Endura I had the same with some Specialized shorts before.

As for Cotton underwear for longer rides (per page one) I'm really not convinced by that.

Even close fitting cotton has a habit of scrunching up and creating pressure points and it holds sweat and moisture in a way most decent synthetics don't.

Alright for an hour or two or a gentle paced touring ride maybe but not for sustained effort for several hours.
