I have a bike - actually, two - which are surplus to requirements. A hardtail which probably needs very minor fettling like a brake bleed but is otherwise in good nick, and a tourer which was bought for touring and never toured so outside of being attached to a (barely used in itself) turbo trainer I'd hazard has done under 100 miles and probably nearer 10. Both are ten years old, both cost around a grand new.
I have no idea where to begin in moving them on. How do I come up with a value? There's a few similar on ebay but asking price != selling price. Do people post these things out or is collection only common? Is a FLBS likely to be interested? I think I still have receipts, certainly for the MTB I do.
Cheers.
eBay, gumtree, Facebook market place or are classified.
As for value what is the least amount of money you would accept? Add 10% then get it listed.
OR
Use eBay listing to figure out the market value.
.
@cougar, stw has a classifieds, why don't you start there 🤣
I'm sure you or drac have said that once or twice. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Start with a price in mind, if it doesnt sell, reduce the price. If you get 10 people saying they will have it without haggling then you've advertised it too cheap.
£1000 bike, ten years old is worth £300 plus covid tax.
Look on eBay for completed prices to give you a clue.
Last bike I sold on ebay was 99p start, no reserve. Left it to market forces
I've done quite a bit throughout lockdown, some on here and some on Pinkbike. Both full bikes and split some. All have been what I would class as top end stuff. I've priced them all at what I would be happy with and in all fairness Ive probably underpriced everything as it all went quick.
I've posted and also met up within reason. Done paypal, bank transfer and cash. All with no problems.
Still got a Turbo Levo, Stumpjumper and Enduro to get round to advertising and have had some interest from word of mouth already.
Do people post these things out or is collection only common?
It's not my preferred way.... I just (3 weeks ago) picked a bike up for a mate (£1500) and my ability to pick it up and check it over played a part in his decision to offer full price if it checked out.
Despite the seller owning a bike shop there were still a few faults he trusted my opinion....
Dropper not working and clutch needed replacing.... similarly he bought his bike off the classifieds here and travelled to collect it.
Non of the last 5 bikes I've bought have been posted either...
Equally when I sold the kids 24 I arranged to meet the prospective buyer where their kid could try the bike and they could check it out. (over an hour for both of us) I pointed out any potential issues etc. and similarly they were happy and didn't haggle.
Just my experience ... you might take a bit longer to sell but worth it IMHO

I ended up with some lovely 350/511 wheels... if I bring a sharpie somewhere (next Trancend?) will you sign them 😉
You have to think how much you think it is worth v's what would you likely get. If it is that old and very good condition the 2 things might be way off. The only way to find out is to get it out there. If it doesn't sell then you are back where you started.
Ebay has less idiots than facebook and gumtree but they are out there and you cant stop them. I would just stick it on starting at the minimum you want and let the auction take care of itself. I would however insist on pick up only at a specific point i.e. say it has to be picked up in person by x date. And loads of pics and description of condition etc. When you get questions like 'how much 4 dis bike m8' just ignore or respond with 'not 4 sale'. These people are not worth dealing with. Also worth having a go on here before resorting to ebay but i'd prefer to sell locally on ebay than post to someone of here.
Now tell us what they are!
Yes yes, I know about the Classifieds. :-p
I’ve posted
How?
I mean, I actually have a bike box here, I bought one for a birthday present (a bike, not a box) last week. do I do as this came - bars off, pedals off?
£1000 bike, ten years old is worth £300 plus covid tax.
It's the tourer that's really giving me gyp TBH. It's unusual, there's only a couple on ebay. One's way tattier than mine and up for £425 with no bids, the other looks pretty mint and is on for £600.
Now tell us what they are!
I wasn't going to unless someone asked.
Surly Cross Check near identical to the listing here. Bike is stock aside from a Brooks saddle (which I might yet swipe) and DMR V6 pedals. Far as I can measure, 50cm frame. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's mint, it's been out of the house like twice. Only thing wrong with it is it needs a damn good dusting!
And a Marin Eldridge Grade. Again, mostly stock aside from DMR V-somethings. It might have had new grips also, it's not actually here at the moment so I can't check. Says 17" frame on the receipt.

Not my listings, just the closest matches I can find.
If they are rare/desirable then best bet is a FB group for the make/owners....
I wasn’t going to unless someone asked.
The whole "stealth ad" thing?
Bah .... Just do it and put up with the ribbing!
If they are rare/desirable then best bet is a FB group for the make/owners….
Ooh, that's a good idea.
Just do it and put up with the ribbing!
I don't care about the ribbing, it's the inevitable accusations of double standards from the usual suspects for the next ten years that's the issue.
Cycling UK forum/classifieds for touring bikes. Get a far better class of customer on there, fewer tyre kickers.
I mean, I actually have a bike box here, I bought one for a birthday present (a bike, not a box) last week. do I do as this came – bars off, pedals off?
That's what I have done in the past and you will get more money for it as potential number of buyers much higher. These days I would just do collection only though as boxing up, sending, transmitting a heavy object with no damage etc,. is more hassle than the extra bit of the price.
/\ pinkbike seems to have far less clueless individuals wanting a £500 bike for £10
I've found this formula can give a useful starting indication of bike value, if the bike is used but in looked after condition:
50% off in the first year, then 10% off every year thereafter.
It's always less than you think!
I get a cardboard bike box from a friendly LBS and advertise on STW. I'll use Facebook groups and Ebay only when I'm getting desperate. Paisley Freight ship for £27.
The Marin will sell easily ebay.
The Surly tourer is a bit more niche. Sell it on here or pinkbike / facebook group.
If you paid a grand and get over £400 back 10 years on then you can't complain.
If they are rare/desirable then best bet is a FB group for the make/owners….
Seems there's a healthy Surly trading FB group...
... in the US.
The Surly tourer
I've just found the handbook, apparently it's a "cyclocross" bike. Who knew. (Everyone bar me I expect.)
do I do as this came – bars off, pedals off?
Yes, you could try just stuffing it in the box all in one piece (some do this, really!) but you won't get far. You gotta pack it, man.
I’ve just found the handbook, apparently it’s a “cyclocross” bike. Who knew. (Everyone bar me I expect.)
It's a do-anything / everything bike. One of those ones that you never see built the same way twice. I reckon it'd go pretty easily on Cycling UK classifieds, I got rid of a couple of my Dad's more esoteric tourers on there (when he quit cycling due to a back injury).
No issues at all, quick and easy sales.
