Hi folks. We are looking to level the playing field for Zwift meet ups over some Strava segments or KOMs etc. On the flat then weight makes little difference so go for a ratio based simply on FTP.
For hills weight has to be considered so I believe the fairest way to do this is to use the riders’ W/kg at FTP as a ratio eg if the KOM’s time is 5mins, rider A W/kg is 4 and rider B is 3.5 then rider A gets a zero weighting and rider B gets 5 x 4/3.5 = 5.7 mins i.e. 0.7x60sec =42s ‘head start’. I appreciate almost no one will challenge the KOM so a better benchmark may be needed.
My question: is this a fair way to decide it?

The ratio sounds like a good starting point to compare riders, but doesn't the reference 'KOM' value need to be the fastest rider's time (or at least in that ball park)? I think you say this in the sentence about a better benchmark.
If the strava KOM is your typical zwift nonsense value (e.g. the Alpe 28 min), then taking this as the KOM time would cluster everyone together way too tightly and the handicap wouldn't work.

If everyone has a bit of zwift riding under their belt, though, then you prob have this number already as there will be segments where the fastest riders have put hard efforts down so know roughly how fast they can go.

Thanks Garry. Yep going for a comparable KOM time or just based on the fasted rider in the event is perhaps a better benchmark. Cheers for the feedback
