trying to fit hope mounts but can't work out how to get the original i spec covers off? they slide along but don't come off - may need a bit of brutality?

Don't force it, you'll snap 'em. Unscrew all the screws at the bottom of the shifter, the whole top comes off and the metal bit is fixed with a screw on the inside of the plastic bit.
