My laptop being mostly knacked, I tend to do most everything on the iPad

Someone suggested bikehike.co.uk, and ... it will let me create a route - yet won't allow me to save a file. Instead, it generates a page of script.

Any other free options I should be looking at? Preferably using OS map data

Strava allows you to do that (on the website). I believe the iOS app also offers this so long as you’re on the paid version.

??? I can save routes or tracks in a variety of formats through Bikehike.

I use RideWithGPS, usually through the browser though, the app's a bit rubbish. I tend to just sync it automatically with my Wahoo account to use on my Elemnt GPS, but you can export .gpx routes from it too.

os maps, i tend to buy the paper ones i need £4.80 (blacks millets with discount code) and sell them as new (without code) on ebay
ends up costing £2-3, rather than £20 a year subscription

the ipad/iphone app works a treat..

the route creator on the Strava website is not terrible on iOS, that's my normal option as it's easy to then get the route onto a Garmin.

If I'm walking rather than biking Viewranger is pretty good although it's a pain to export the data to other apps should you want to do that. Can use OS maps if you've bought them, or free Google/OSM/etc maps

+1 for viewranger, with the advantage that it can be used offline once you've downloaded the map (handy if you're remote), and you can buy maps tile by tile (= you don't download stuff you'll never use). Route creation is easy on a mobile phone, but as mentioned above, exporting to other apps/devices is not easy (unless you sync your app to the online viewranger site).
