Hello

I have this older XT crankset (i think 2010), can anybody tell me the chain ring size i need for it?

Do i need some special bolts for it ?

What brand of chain ring should i look for ?

i don't push big gears, on the rear i have a 16 and 18 option, what should i go for up front ?

Thanks !

xt

Just keep the middle 36 ring and stick an 18 sp cog on the back. 2:1 ratio is normally fine for 26", maybe a bit less for 29".

You just need 4/5 narrow chainring bolts.

this is my xt set up....

104 mm BCD alloy rings (32 tooth) (wear is so slow theres no need for steel) a SRAM singlespeed chain (cheap as chips and bullet proof) short chain ring bolts and the ring on the outside (means the rear sprocket is right to the end of the freehub for a perfect chain line) so as to give as much mud clearance between tyre and chain and it looks better :).

Ratio depends on how fit / strong you are and how hilly where you ride is. Id start with an 18 at the back and then just your original 32t up front and see how you get on. If its too easy you can swap out to 16 at the back. Too hard and you may want a smaller front ring. Once you have your ratio sorted i'd recommend getting a proper ss ring and chain.

You need shorter chain ring bolts and i mount mine on the inside of the spider but im not sure it really matters as long as you get a good chainline.

Same BCD. That's determined by the cranks. I'd probably go bigger on the front, maybe 36 or 40 if you're unsure, or 42 even. Assuming you're running slicks.
I run a slick drop bar bike 42 16, and a knobbly tyred 'cx' 42 20. It's just cogs. If you get it a bit wrong it's not too expensive to adjust.

Replace the outer ring with a bashguard. Means you can use the same bolts, and helps to keep your trousers away from the chain.

Id counter the idea of going for a high gear, unless it is just for on road commuting on the flat.

Pushing a big gear is fatiguing, spinning a small gear at higher cadence is more flexible. Mines 32-19 and just about feels like im spinning out on a slight road downhill (which is fine because who wants to ride downhill on the road).

You don't need narrow/wide on singlespeed. There's no retention issue as the chain can't jump off, (unless it's MILES too long.) Better to go for a singlespeed specific chainring, in steel for maximum life unless you are a weight weenie.

These from on-one are great, it's what I use on my SSer. https://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CROOSS/on-one-stainless-chainring

edit - only one BCD pattern and tooth count now, sure there used to be more. You might be lucky compatibility wise, if not St John Street Cycles will probably have loads of options.
