Being fed up of rim dings ive put a tough casing wtb on with a rimpact but the weight is 400 grams plus more and my god i feel it.

Only problem is... i cant get the dam thing off now. Cant even get a tyre leaver into the rim.

Work the beads into the rim well underneath the insert.

But I bet you’re thinking you’re feeling the extra weight far more than actually feeling it!

Put wheel on floor horizontally, palms of hands on each side of tyre.

Push down really hard until it pops into the rim bed, then work it round.

Put wheel on floor. Put block of wood under one section of the rim to support it and then another block of wood on the opposite side on the tyre. Carefully put one foot on the wheel thats touching floor and then other foot on the wood thats on tyre. apply pressure and tyre pops off the bead.

But has it stopped the rim dings?

Wheel flat on floor.
Use back of heal to push the tyre into the rim well.
Once one bit goes the rest is easy.

Im pretty sure that there has been no rim dings since this setup.

I guess my issue us that i set it up this way as i got excited about riding BPW and other rocky trail centers which is now getting nearly impossible to do with 2 kids. So all my riding will be from the house limiting to woody muddy trails with few rocks to worry about. Sadly there is tonnes of climbing and simple XC needed to get to the trails regardless.

Im just tempted to get another rear wheel and pop a lightweight tyre on for now and keep the other setup ready for when brownie points allow me to go to trail centers.

Its definitely stopped the rim dents. But i could drop 400 grams for general xc use. That will be noticeable on the rear tyre.

I had to use a Stanley knife, mine weren’t budging. (Planet X ones that since I bought they advised going one size smaller)

I’m having the same issues trying to remove a tough casing WTB with Nukeproof Ard insert😬 I do like using the inserts mainly for the security it gives to run lower tyre pressure for better grip & bit more comfort on the hardtail. But if the tyres going to be so hard to remove then I’m not sure they’re worth ballache.

I find brute force with the wheel centred over an open dustbin works for me... all the effort/weight going into driving the tyre lever down onto the side wall near the rim, to push it away from the rim... no need to try to hook anything, just vertical pressure downwards to dislodge the bead... work round the wheel this way until wholly unseated and only then look to get a tyre lever under the bead

I think the issue is WTB tires and not inserts per se. I've had to cut WTB tires from rims on more than one occasion even without inserts and so now avoid them.

Best tip would be go and watch the cushcore video on how to install them. Removal is similar and it will give you the knack/technique.

It's mostly how you visualise it I think, I think of it as sort of pushing the bead under the insert, other people call it rolling it under, it's all the same thing but with different descriptions.

I just took the last one I had fitted out, don't think I'll be putting it back. Maybe if I'm racing again in future just to get me to the end of stages but for normal riding, nah.

Also, bring the wheel inside to warm up some if it's in a cold garage or similar. Really makes a difference when removing a stubborn tyre.

I thought I'd have to cut one off recently after trying all the techniques above. Lent it against the radiator for an hour and popped off relatively easily.

Had the same problem with road tubeless, pushed it so hard I ripped the tyre off the bead, which I then had to cut off...

After cutting off the last tyre I tried to remove with an insert I bought the big cushcore tyre lever designed just for this type of thing. This weekend I removed a tyre with an insert in using this and it took a couple of hassle free minutes.

I had this exact same issue with a 2.8 vigilante & rimpact plus inserts. Tightest bloody tyre I’ve ever come across. First time removing it (I’m a serial tyre changer) I had to resort to pinching the sidewall in a big bench vice. That worked a treat but I’ve had it off since by standing on the sidewall in stiff shoes (five tens) and pulling the rim up on the other side. Good job I love the tyre as it’s staying on til it’s worn out now. All other tyres with rimpact original have been super easy to remove, it’s just the WTB tight beads.

I feel your pain (or rather my thumbs / hands do). Stuck a Rimpact onto a wheel for the first time ever as running a 2.6” Forekaster and that’s the flimsiest tyre I’ll have ever run.

It was all going fine until the final bit of the tyre going over the rim. Fought with it for about 25 mins before I won. Then I realised I’d put the tyre on back to front (although the logo / valve alignment was perfect) ffs. Spent another 20 mins getting the bugger off. Then another 20 mins fighting it back on again.

Hopefully once I stick the sealant in it holds air and doesn’t need touching again for a long time!
