Anyone been off-roading south/south west of the Elan Valley recently, or thereabouts? Thinking of trying to find the mostly invisible trail from Trallwm Cottages east of Abergwesyn, heading north over the uplands to Dol y Mynach reservoir car park, as part of a bigger loop. Being a softy I don't want to end up crying with trench foot and hypothermia. I'll definitely be wimping out of the Towy Splashes trail & going the long hilly way round, once was enough. But what are the uplands like, anybody?

Pretty wet as standard.
Had a contractor almost sink a digger up on those commons last August. 😄

The grass tumps, drainage ditches and broken peat will be a greater hindrance from what I remember.

The track that exits the forest at Cefn garw/Trallwm towards Carnau is mostly rideable, the first couple 100m onto the moorland is a push, but then the track is fairly well defined to Carnau.

I rode over in March and some sections were wet and energy sapping, even with a 52 tooth rear and 32 front it was hard going, but all rideable.

Track improves at Bwlch y ddau faen and is a lovely descent back into the valley towards Dol y Mynach, I've never managed to find the lower track, so I always stay high until the fence line, then ride down a very steep bumpy hillside to the gate that takes you back to a well surfaced track.

thanks for the info both... I got a bit lost the last time I tried it, started crossing the moorland too far west following what turned out to be random sheep trails and ended up pushing through endless tussocks made from some kind of alien grass that can cut flesh. While it hailed. In June. Maybe I'd better pack the gore tex socks just in case. Havent decided on a date yet. Looks like a clear track on the map going carnau -> bwlch y ddau faen -> nant paradwys -> rhiwnant -
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=280942&y=260685&z=120&sv=280942,260685&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=577&ax=280942&ay=260685&lm=0
and track looks ok from satellite view, looks like it should be easy but but I guess I'll find out its harder to spot the tracks when I get there.
