What's the go to Buildings and Contents insurance at the moment? Was with Pedalcover, but the renewal has come through at a whopping 38% higher than last year!
I use Lloyds. Got the expensive bikes listed as valuables.
Bikes listed as specified items with Esure
Aviva plus, not the cheapest but good cover and no silly T&C .
I just joined pedalcover, quote was on par with other providers but better bike cover. CyclingUK members get a decent discount which may offset the price rise?
Pedalcover gets expensive if you have more than one bike. Aviva just want to know how much your most expensive bike costs, and works out a lot cheaper (just under half what Pedalcover quoted me).
Aviva through Quotemehappy - came out cheaper than going direct to Aviva. Based on the value of the most expensive bike rather than the total value as I have 7 bikes.
Aviva.
Refreshingly simple application for a multiple bike household and extra discount for having my van already insured with them made it most competitive quote.
Aviva and quote me Happy and go compare seem to have a 5k limit on bikes (unless I'm mistaken) so don't waste your time if you ride something more valuable! Any suggestions for posh bikes insurance? 😉
Barclays was cheapest by far when I looked as long as your most expensive bike is under their limit.
Aviva - discount as I have a pension with them and easy to arrange over the phone (needed to do that as most expensive bike >£5k)
Where locks are required (eg away from home) there's no required rating. The chassis of a touring caravan on a site counts as an 'immovable object', other insurers do not cover theft here.
Halifax here.
Pedal cover gave a significantly better price but the requirement for receipts for the bikes made it useless for me.
I used Barclays but for the bikes only. Tell them the price of your most expensive up to £5k and all covered. Was about £55. You can then shop around for the best value policy for the rest. Saved me a fortune over Pedalcover or policies including bike cover.
I just joined pedalcover, quote was on par with other providers but better bike cover.
I'm pretty sure it was Pedlecover that refused to pay out on a claim because the policy holder didn't have proof of purchase for the padlock and chain .
Barclays were great for me last year, and dealt with a claim very well. Underwritten by Aviva who I have had good dealings with in the past. Unfortunately for us the premium rocketed this year so not for me, but if price is good I'd recommend both.
This year have moved to Frontier who I knew little about but seemed to get well reviewed. In terms of setting up policy and making adjustments it's been very good, and they will cover bikes over £5k unlike Aviva/Barclays. At the moment we have buildings and contents combined, with bikes included in contents cover.
Aviva Plus here.
Tried Barclays, Halifax & Nationwide.
If you go with Pedalcover check outbuildings cover limit, that goes with all of them actually.
No-one's mentioned the claims process if your bikes are stolen.
It took Admiral a month to even approve my claim. Then fob me off with a voucher for Tredz.
There's a reason that bike cover on home insurance is cheap.
I now pay for dedicated bike insurance and the huge benefits that come with it.
No-one’s mentioned the claims process if your bikes are stolen.
I did 2 posts above....
Claims process with Barclays last year very easy, likewise Aviva in the last.
M&S for me. Specified cover for 9 bikes with a total value over £35k, insured whilst out and about, Bikes, house and contents was £723 - most valuable bike is listed as £9.5k. Up from £616 last year. I couldn't find anything cheaper.
@tenaciousdoug So you did, not sure how I missed that.
am with halifax, though due to renew in a few weeks. looked at the comparison sites and can't get anything below £35 per month for buildings and contents. Halifax renewal is £26pm so sticking with that. only a couple of high ish value bikes as I only buy old stuff..;-)
Halifax for us.
I just added my new bike and it made the premium £2.68 cheaper 🤣
£10k total limit for listed bikes, which for us is fine but isn’t actually that much these days.
I’ve never had to test the claims procedure.
About to test the claims procedure with Halifax as my two bikes went last night from the garden shed.
Shite news, but please report back on how it goes.
Nationwide for us. 4 named high value bikes on the policy
Well Halifax claim line is not open on a Sunday so your option to claim is via an online website. I shall update as the claim progresses.
Do all bike cover policies require receipts? On switching back to Pedal Cover I just noticed in the policy wording:
We won't pay a pedal cycle claim if:
you cannot provide the original receipts for your:
– pedal cycle or cycle accessory
showing the date, price paid, details of items, name and address of a seller.
Thing is my bikes are 6-11 years old and I've no clue where the receipts are now...
I've asked them for clarification and if there's any alternative like getting independent valuations but wondering if it's a very standard clause that I've just not noticed before in other policies. I've always viewed receipts as a 'nice to have' as should make claims easier but in their absence assumed photos and serial numbers etc. would suffice.
[Halifax] £10k total limit for listed bikes, which for us is fine but isn’t actually that much these days.
That's 10k per bike I think, certainly they've happily accepted 4 bikes on my listing with a combined value of rather more than that.

They changed that a few years ago, it's "specific" to pedal cover best I can tell and rendered the policy pretty useless for me.
Any suggestions for posh bikes insurance?
I'm using Laka.co for separate bike cover, not that I'd classify my bikes as posh!
I would post a referral link for £25 off but I think that's a bit frowned on here.
Do all bike cover policies require receipts?
Just checked with mine - they do require some photos of your bike and any associated kit you're covering so they have an idea of it's 'before' value and can verify make/model/etc. No mention of having to have the receipt but I expect it would make sense to include a photo of any you still have or a copy of a confirmation email if bought online.
Quick update on my claim.
Logged on as they didn't do calls on the day of the break in, had to supply details of the burglary and police crime number, then supply details on the bikes and any additional equipment fitted.
Halifax sent a link to my own upload pics portal type thing.
So far I've put on images of the broken shed, hooded yoofs disappearing down the street, me all over on the bikes and such. They rang me at 5.59 this evening which I missed and they shut at 6pm.
Also they ask for you to give details when uploading images, but then give only you 30 characters max to type.
I've yet to give the required 'replacement costs' estimate as the Camber that was stolen is no longer in the Spesh line up. Struggled to get the original receipt as the Camber was a replacement for my stolen Stumpy via insurance. Thankfully I have paperwork for the Cannondale.
So, I will await a call from them and see what happens next.
I looked at the Laka bike specific insurance mentioned in another thread and this came to more than my contents insurance even with the same bikes specified. Is there any advantage in bike v. content insurance?
Missed another phone call from Halifax this morning, voice mail says they are happy with the evidence provided and are ready to make a cash settlement. I rang back but it's just the usual 'we are very busy etc' hopefully a call tomorrow from them.
I was offered a bike from Wheelies(?) Last time I had to claim but this is cash, not sure what to expect or accept.
Interestingly on my renewal they upped the maximum payout per bike, I gave comparable bikes as examples (might have got a bit cheeky with the camber) I suggested a stumpy comp alloy and a similar Cannondale trail 5 HT. The Cannondale was my OH's commuter for work that was fitted with some semi slicks.
Can't see me getting stumpy cash levels but let's see.
Time wise although it's been 18 days since the burglary, because I was unable to complete documents due to working away, it's taken Halifax probably 6 days to get to the offer.
Offer received from Halifax today, breakdown as follows;
They offered a total of £2503 for both bikes
They said equivalent Cannondale can be bought for £503 online now and the Camber equivalent would be the Stumpy but as the max per bike is £2k thats all they could offer.
I bought the Cannondale from ebay just a couple of months after the 2012 olympic bike rush, unused and boy it certainly was. Paid £295 and the guy gave me the receipt from Sunset Cycles for £525.
The Camber I got from a previous insurance claim was IIRC listed at £1850 (probably in 2011?) it was a replacement for the Stumpy that was stolen which I paid £1500 for in a sale at Edinburgh Cycles.
A small excess leaves me with a fair few quid to play with. I think the OH wants a lightweight simple city/commuter type thing which should be easy to pick up and then I can decide whats next.
Can't argue with the process really and they've been fairly quick. I suppose if you have a more valuable bike you really want to be specifying it as the limit is £2k per bike on my home policy (these bikes were covered in outbuildings including garage and shed as well as away from home). My road bike which cost £3k is chained to the roof in my garage and is on a separate policy.
As you can see from the dates I don't change my bikes often so in this case the under £2k value works for me reasonably well.
Off to start a what new bike thread....
