As the title really, bike weighs 10.2 kg with the SRAM level TLM brakes (they weigh 244 grams per brake, not a fan of SRAM brakes, have Hope on all my other bikes hence the change)
Want to keep the bike weight the same but wonder if the X2 will leave me under braked
Both brakes will have the Tech 3 lever
X2 weighs 249 grams per brake
E4 weighs 266 grams per brake
So a difference of 34 grams in total
Depends on what you weigh and how big the rotors will be.
I'd go with whatever minimises the number of different brake pad types you need to keep in stock.
I have both and if buying now would go E4 for the extra power with, to me, insignificant extra weight.
The X2s however are fine so if the grams matter to you I wouldn’t hesitate to use those especially for XC/light trail. I have always found them to have plenty of stopping power.
Caveats are I use race levers which I think have a little more leverage than Tech 3 and I weigh about 11 stone so if you weigh a chunk more your results may be different.
Why limit braking power for the sake of an ounce?
I wouldn’t notice 30g
I would notice brakes that don’t stop me : )
I had 160mm rotors on the front of a hardtail for one ride as that’s what I had in the shed when I built it up. 2 hard stops that did not stop any were near fast enough and I quickly swapped in a 200mm rotor. It must be heavier, it stops me much faster.
Also +1 on minamising the lack of brake pads.
Mates been on X2's on 203mm disks for years and only really feels under braked when on DH uplift days. Is going to upgrade his front fro E4 to see if he can get a nice compromise with E4 up front and X2 out back.
Cheers for all the replies
I'm 95kg and using 180mm discs
Think i will go with a set of E4's, will rob them off my Hybrid then sell the Sram Level TLM's and put the money towards another set of E4's to replace the ones i pinch off the hybrid
Are you just swapping out the callipers? If so and you're looking for a home for your X2's then give me a shout.
Yeah I’m 100kg and have always (from the early 2000’s) run 200/180 rotors. I would go minimum e4 front x2 rear which is what I have on my xc bike but all the others have m4/e4/v4 front and back.
