Hi, forgive me if someone has already asked this, but, I used to have some Hope Brakes a long long time age and they used to squeal all the time no mater what I did to try and sort it.
Does anyone know if the new generation of Hope brakes suffer from the same problem is it no longer a thing?
Alternative option is to go for Magura possibly MT7? any advice would be welcome. Thanks

It's perfectly possible to set them up to squeal if you want to.

What were your previous Hopes that squealed ?. Wouldnt be mini's would they 😕

Brakes can squeal if not aligned properly.

Twenty years of owning Hope brakes here and I've never had a squealy one yet.

The first gen minis -before they changed the pistons to the  phenolic, were a 2 piece affair with a alloy outer and a steel inner. The inner bit wasn't fixed and had movement in it. This meant the inner bit could vibrate, and its that that caused horrific squealing.

I think it was during this brakes time that Hope changed their pistons to phenolic.

My Tech3 E4s are the least squealy brake I've ever owned. Maybe a tad on the initial pull on very wet conditions but other than that not a peep.

Soon to be replaced with Tech4 V4s.

Same here, never had a squealing Hope brake apart from a little noise from the initial splash of water on the rotor and caliper but it doesn't last, I don't use sintered pads though.

I have Tech 4 V4 on my bike. 180mm out back, 200mm up front. I am using the thicker rotors because I am a large chap and braided hoses (for no other reason than availability when I built the bike).

Unlike many levers, the adjustment dials actually do something discernible.

VERY powerful (at first I thought too powerful but now I have learned to control it, the power is reassuring). No brake fade (might be the thicker rotors), no squeal. Just using the standard pads that came fitted rather than the spares that also come in the box.

I like metal things vs carbon/thermoplastic things, and whilst I am not jingoistic, it is nice to support UK industry. Plus I like the support that Hope offer.

Highly recommended.

The green pads are pretty sqeualy when it's wet. Reds seem fine!

Hi I think I had the old mini's I have to confess is was longer than I care to remember.
I think from the other responces hope may well have sorted the problem out over the years.

Thank you all for your replies, really useful feed back. I think I may well go for the hopes. Appears that everyone one who's replied is happy with them which says a lot.

I've been a long time Singletrack member, but, this is the first time I've ever used the forum, or any forum! You may have guessed this from my lack of being able to do the reply thing properly!
So it's really nice to get some useful nice replies, so thanks for making my first post a success!
Cheers
Mike

I am not using vented rotors.

The V4 brakes have wider pad spacing which I like. If you fit vented rotors, the pad clearance reduces so that you lose the benefit.

I run the 2.3mm heavy duty rotor. Less chance of warping, less heat build up. Plus I run centre lock hubs and the alloy carrier that Hope use won’t fit the 6 bolt adapter.

Just back from a muddy wet ride this morning using the green pads and they were silent and powerful and consistent throughout.

Depends on your intended usage. Vented rotors are a tad overkill for a trail bike. Probably better suited to DH.

I have the Tech 4 V4 with floating rotors and love everything about them………….except the noise, which is driving me crazy. My previous Shimano XT 4 pots were dead silent but these new hopes constantly squeal and chirp.

I have a lot of experience setting up Hopes and was meticulous with these, perfect bleed (as per new instruction video), centred calliper on disk, equalised pistons and made sure all move properly, correct hope adapter on Hope frame etc etc. Fantastic feel, power, modulation, no fade, no wandering bite no rub etc but terrible noise.

I made a post about it on the Hope FB page but just got a load of “mine are silent, you don’t know how to setup brakes properly” unhelpful nonsense!

I am using the stock green pads so maybe try the red next. Really don’t want to go back to XT as fed up of buying whole lever units when they break but the noise of the Hopes is ruining the ride experience.

It’s almost as if the pads are contaminated yet there is no evidence of this. Take away the noise and you have the perfect brake.

My T4 V4 front squeals. Or at least on light use it gives out a shrieking noise, but when i pull harder to stop the squealing pretty much goes away. These are red standard pads, on an ebike with the combined weight(me/bike) coming in about 110kg

No squealing from me, on green pads, but no mega wet rides yet. Comparable to Trickstuff in power, if not as instant (personal preference on feel really) but lots of modulation.

Running vented rotors but as I don’t live at the top of an Alp they’re probably overkill, but work well and look cool. Heavy though.

As a long time Hope brake sceptic, these are bloody good.

@duir we should partner up.

I have Tech 4 E4 with floating rotors. Moved from Shimano XT 2 pots.

Exactly same as you, moved from silent XT brakes to chirping Tech 4's. I've bled, re-bled, centred calliper, sorted pistons. Haven't used the Hope adapter though....still chirp-tastic.

Jeeze I can't stop the chirp for love no money. They don't honk as such just a birdy like cheep. Worse on the front then the back but it totally ruins my riding experience.

Currently on Greens.

Not convinced I'm centralising the pistons properly. The margin for error seems so small and difficult to tell whether I've done a good job or not. No rub at all but all I'd say without the pads the pistons don't come out evenly (should they?) and I can't get them to....I don't think it's an air behind the pistons issues as followed the Hope guide.

My XT's were simply press the lever, tighten the calliper bolts and ride. I never expected the Hopes to be so troublesome.

I've used the red and green pads with mine so far, they are noisy initially in the wet but in the dry they are quiet.

I am also using the v4 vented rotors.

There was a thread on here not long ago about others having similar issues, some had them replaced under warranty.

I'll see if I can find it.

Tech 4 V4's with V4 rotors here

8 months  in so far and zero issues or noise, just like my Tech 3 V4's Tech 3 E4's and RX4+ on my other bikes

Currently running the purple E bike pads in the Tech 4 V4's

Interestingly yesterday just out of interest I soaked the pads with water before the ride. This lead to an initial screech followed by silent brakes. So now I am just confused as logic tells me disk brakes are more noisy in the wet!
