From the main thread it sounds like early reliability issues have been sorted. Looking to get a set for a new bike which will be an ebike, I'm 86kg,  I like power, modulation and steep trails, GSOH, own house, car and most of my teeth.

Anyone tried both? I think the E4 are supposed to have better lever "feel" at the expense of a bit of power? What is the V4 feel and modulation like compared to Code RSCs?

Fanks!

Big lad on an e-bike? I wouldn't even consider the E4 and I say that as a very satisfied E4 user. Just go full fat.

V4 all the way. Possibly a 220 up front depending on the application.

I personally found the RSCs to be easily overwhelmed by heat soaking. Tech4 V4 is a better feeling / more consistent brake IMO.

Most of the weight difference between the two is in the braided hose and Hope's own testing says that braided hose offered no real advantage.

I can't see a reason to non go V4 if they fit. Also gives the option of vented rotors.

neither - Hayes dominion with a 220/223mm rotor.

E4 on one bike v4 on the other.

V4 are better and only very slightly heavier and spendier.

If I had my cash again I'd go v4 v4, but it's not enough of a difference to sell some perfectly decent brakes and replace with v4.

If you haven't got anything to compare them to, you probably won't notice

86kg

A lightweight 😆

Seriously though V4 all the way, it is a really good stopping brake, when you want it to do that.

CRC have silver/red rear E4 going for £137, plenty power with bigger rotors.

Brayton runs e4 not v4 as he said hope told him it has better modulation and bites sooner than v4 .see his hard-line video

Brayton now uses V4s.

See one of his more up to date videos.

I'd go with V4 and 2.3 rotors in whatever size suits your terrain.

In my case that was 220/200 on my eeb.
203/203 on my enduro bike.
Tweed Valley steep.

Tried them with 1.8 rotors and found them less consistent feeling than with the 2.3 rotors.
Seems to me the rotor warps less and doesn't try and push the pistons back in causing a change in lever throw.

Nobody ever complains about being over-braked.

I have the V4 with Hope's 180mm/200mm extra thick e-bike rotors.

They have never missed a beat. No reliability issues at all.

I never notice the weight penalty. I am always grateful for the braking power and modulation.

I should have said in my first reply (but I was sitting on a windy park bench) that I have the Code RSC and the E4. I much prefer the E4.

The Code's are fine power wise when they work. The plastic piston in the lever is really sensitive to heat so the feel is inconsistent and in hot weather it swells up and makes your lever blade all floppy. This alone is unforgiveable on Sram's part. They also have the sticky piston problem which Hope seems to have eliminated with their new pistons. The 'tool free' bite point wheel things have never turned. Mine are jammed, I can't move them even with tools.

They're functional but I've spent more time messing with them to keep them working and they've only been outside a dozen times. One day when I'm feeling frisky I'll bang another set of Hope's on the credit card and bin the Code's.

I'll buy V4's next time. They weren't available when Start Fitness had the E4's in the sale.

For an ebike I’d go V4, but the E4s have ample power and great modulation.

V4’s - I have them in both my hard tail (200/200) and full sus (220/200). BUT…..

While they are EPIC brakes, better by far IMO than my old Code RSC’s and an upgrade over the E4, its really really worth using the V4 rotors which adds to the overall cost

the V4 caliper chassis is wider so using normal width rotors the pads have to move more to contact the rotor - not an issue with new pads but when you get to around half pad wear you might get degraded performance. Not an issue with the V4 rotors as they are much thicker - but chuffing expensive!

I have v4 rotors on the 220/200 set up but not on the hardtail with 200mm F&R - taht still has normal hope floating rotors. as much I know it’ll be better I don’t have another £250 to spend on changing them at the moment!!

I was put off the cost of the vented V4 rotors when I first looked at buying a set of V4s but spoke to Hope re. these https://www.tartybikes.co.uk//disc_brake_rotors/hope_v4_23mm_ebike_rotor/c76p13988.html?cookie_all=1&cookie_refresh=1 and have been really pleased with them on my FS. My H/T has V4s using TRP 2.3mm discs and feel pretty similar.

For the minimal price difference (new anyway) I don't see much point in buying the E4s over the V4s though I wouldn't mind finding a cheap pair of used E4s the the other bike!

Cheers all. I ordered some V4s and have a pair of Galfer shark rotors but as they're 2mm I think I'll return them and get some 2.3s

Managed to pick up a set of new v4s for £320! Is the general consensus the trp r1 2.3mm rotors the best bet to go with them then?

I have the hope 2.3mm rotors. They work fine but they aren’t finished particularly well and there are spot of rust appearing. Despite not using them on an e-bike, they have annoying flashes of electricity cut out of them (because electric) which look a bit weird on an analogue set up. <br /><br />

No harm in trying the TRP version. There’s nothing special about the Hopes rotors.

@singlespeedstu pretty sure that's just for his ebike

Also look at velozone for trp and they have tektro cheap 2.3mm rotors

The trp ,s are great the trp cheaper brand tektro are also great but can sometimes need a tweet to keep them straight

Yeah, annoying isn't it.

Hope don’t make the ebike discs anymore. Instead all their non-floating steel discs 180mm+ diameter are now 2.3mm thick, with only 120-160mm steel discs being 1.8mm. Lightning bolts are gone!

Where from ?

Chain Reaction have the left hand in black for £159.99 so I got tredz to price match it twice after I realised their price match code wasn’t bothered if you selected left or right. Obviously had to be two separate orders, left a few hours between price matches and made sure I got two different people on the chat from tredz.

I got the black silver from Tredz for £180 an end. Also just bought a pair of DT Swiss H1700 for a very good price, centrelock which allowed me to order 2.3mm TRP rotors from Merlin for a bargainous £15 each! They only had 203mm but I figured that will be fine on the V4s

Made use of that thanks very much, though I got the L/H from CRC @£159.99 and the R/H from Tredz @£159.99.

I didnt want to try it on twice at tredz and get the same operator, I could have left it a bit but my luck I'd get the same guy 😆 So at least this way I still pay the same.

Really simple process. Says yes and gives you a one off code which you apply in the basket checkout so choosing RH or LH isnt a hinder, and you arent stuck with an exact copy of whats on the CRC website.

I paid the extra delivery for crc, might help but done is done and will report back once things have arrived(or in the case of CRC maybe not 😆  )
