Hello,

I have a hope SS/trials hub on the 29er but I want to try 1X6. Where do I bloody start?

I am really clueless on this subject.

Can I just buy a Zee short rear mech, Zee shifter and find a 10spd cassette that I can take apart?

or will 9spd be easier to use?

Do you have a tried and tested arrangement?

Hi, I'm using the same hub with the smallest 7 cogs of an XT cassette (so 7 speed). The biggest 3 come on a separate spider so you just don't fit that and fit the rest as you would a normal cassette. I'm using a Zee mech and a 10 spd XT shifter and chain. With a 30 tooth Raceface narrow/wide ring it all works a treat!

There's a good thread on mtbr about various set ups. I have 7 9sp cogs (XT) with XT shifter and Saint rear der. I've done this on 2 frames, the only tweak I had to do was put a thin washer on the rear der mounting bolt on one of the frames to get the pully/cassette clearance.
People have managed to fit 8 10sp cogs.

Have a read through this lot:
