My hub went almost silent on the commute in this morning; the lack of noise was quite disconcerting really! It regained a bit of volume after a couple of miles but was still muted. Has done a few thousand miles so could do with a service, clearly.

Can anyone recommend an idiots guide including what tools required and the best place to get replacement bearings (if required)?

Tools needed is just a cassette tool and chain whip, pair of pliers to get the end caps off. The freehub just pulls off.

Heres a guide i used the first time.

the bearings aren't responsible for making the noise, that's the 'leaf spring' pawls moving past the pick ups.

With the bike on the floor grab hold of the wheel and try to move it side to side? it's shouldn't move but if it does then your bearings need replacing. If it's not making any noise then I know nothing about that, somebody will be along shortly.

I serviced mine the other day because I accidentally pulled the freehub off when removing an old cassette.

It's actually a LOT quieter now so I'm worried I've done something wrong - probably too much grease in there.

No wobble in the wheel so I guess bearings are OK. Will open it up though according to guide above and give it a proper clean and regrease though! Cheers guys.

You don't need the tool to refit the seal, it's pretty easy to refit. I use the ball end of an allen key but there's a load of ways to do it.

Your leaf springs that push the pawls out to engage in the ratchet are probably broken.

Mine ran alright with all four gone as the pawls still just got picked up by the ratchet. But obviously it was time to sort it. If your bearings are ok, you'll be fine with the basic tools above plus a seal installing tool from hope (not essential) but very useful.

I have to wonder why hope changed to using leaf springs, they are not as good a the little coil ones they used to use (but admittedly a lot less fiddly and less liable to fly out of the free hub as you remove it).

Remember to only apply a minimum of grease if you like the Hope ratchet sound.

Did you reset the seal with the proper tool? If not, that is probably why.
