Hi all,
I have a very old Hope Pro 2 based wheel I plan to use on the turbo.
The freehub seal has seen better days and I can't get it to seat by hand.
As it will only be used indoors and I have no other Hope hubs, I am thinking of just leaving the freehub seal off rather than buy the seal seating tool.
If it was used outdoors I can see it wouldn't be smart and the freehub falls off without the seal in place but I can live with that. I don't think the seal is doing anything else and the small metal spacer between the freehub and hub body seems to be the only thing keeping the spacing right and making sure nothing binds.
Can anyone see a reason not to leave the freehub seal off?
First world problems eh 🙂
Ta!
Well, it's not going to be the end of the world, but it keeps grease in as much as it keeps muck out. They can be tricky to seat but it is possible without the tool.
I haven't ever fiddled with my Hope, but my Superstar V6 is very similar is most other ways and I've found a scaffold pole offcut works pretty well as a replacement for the proper tool (which I now have anyway). Go have a scan around a building site and you might get lucky!
I used an aeropress funnel to seat mine, perfect fit.
Pretty important. They're an arse to seat and often get stretched by not being seated properly.
Just read about it being for a turbo. Not so important, then.
I vaguely remember cobbling together various things to seat my old one. PVC waste pipe and a teaspoon handle I think…
But it’ll be fine without it if it’s just on a turbo
Pretty sure i've always just used my thumbnails and they seem to work fine. But yeah, i can't see it will matter indoors.
