After many years I resurrected my old bike but need needed to fix a rear wheel spoke. Hope pro 2 with a maxle screw in lever.
The whole cassette fell off with free hub attached. Which meant I now see it has been running on 1 pawl only.
So I need pawl springs. But should I be worried that the freehub just sits on the hub, retained only by the maxle?
It's normally held in by the seal. Yours is by no means the first to come apart in this manner. 😁
Does it matter if all the gubbins is held tight by the maxle qr?
Was the axle still there or did it literally just fall off after you removed the maxel, if the later the axle will have snapped (mine ran for over a year like this), easy to replace!
Axle seems to be fine as far as I can tell with a screwdriver poke. Just the freehub fell off.
mine just did this
it took half an hour of gentle levering and tapping to get the cassette off the freehub
@sui you were right. Took it to an expert and he straight away said "no wonder it fell off, the axles snapped!" What i was looking at was the sheared off bit all nice and flush. Excuse for a pro rebuild.
Glad you got that sorted, always amazed at what will work when you don't look or clean things... 😅
The magic word there was "maxle", the pro 2 axle in 12mm format was piss-weak, so unless the bike's own axle takes up a lot of the slack, they snap. You can upgrade to the pro 2 evo freehub and axle, if you want to fix that, they kept the same main hub shell so it's totally retrofittable... or you can just fit another axle (hope will usually replace it for free because it's such a well known faul- they sent me two, "for next time it happens")
OP, I've got a 12mm pro2 axle in the spares box if you want it.
@grannyring I'd love it if it's for a 135mm rear spacing and going spare. I'll message!
I think the 135 Vs 142 is all in the end caps and the axle itself is the same.
It is, yep

Replied OP sorry for delay!
