Hi,
I am thinking of selling my Crossmax Sls and getting a set of hope pro 2 evo hubs on Stans Crest Rims. Would this be a mistake?
Thanks
Just recently gone for the Hope Pro 2 evo straight pull and the Stans Crest Rims
nice and fast rolling and very light
Another friend has this combo and he hammers them.
I dont know anything regarding the Crossmax sorry.
I guess it depends what you want out of your wheelset.
SL's are good wheels.
If the Hoops are tweaked by a profesional builder, then they'll improve on the SL's for stiffness and power transfer.( the sl's use the ISO pulse system and some of the initial force applied goes into loading the system) But stock Hoops are just that. They may be lighter, but might not offer any discernable advantage over the Mavic factory build in terms of performance.
It will depend how on how old the Mavics are, as they use Zircal alloy spokes that will work harden as they stretch in use and become less effective over time.
Then a new built wheel with steel spokes will perform better in some aspects. And a hand finished set will be stiffer and more responsive again.
For the money, Hoops are a "no brainer", but as an alternative to factory performance wheelsets, they come up short unless you get them tweaked out. Then the cost comes out about the same. But the performance lasts longer due to the properties of the materials used.
