So it turns out I'm way too rad (or clumsy) for my Hope axle. Spent the ride dropping chains with no obvious cause (1x with a NW chainring so should be fine), got home and quickly found a possible cause. My Hope Pro 2 rear axle has snapped. Quite pleased to make it home now (although I was of course only walking distance away). I suspect my weight, not very delicate landing technique and riding a hardtail coupled with an old hub has caused the demise. Looking at the axle it is pretty thin. What are the upgrade options? Don't mind a little extra weight for some extra beefiness. Its a 135x10 QR but happy to go to bolt through it that is an option. Or will just getting an axle that isn't 10 years old be enough?

If it is the Pro 2 and not the Pro 2 Evo I have one that I'm not using. For a sensible offer it's yours.

See if it's worth going to the Evo axle setup while you're at it.
I did my pro 2 so that I could fit an XD freehub. Maybe the axle is stronger.

I had a Pro2 alloy 142x12mm axle snap. Replaced it with a steel one and no issues.

Other option is to change all the bearings to those in the Pro2 Evo and use the Evo axle kit. Thicker walled alloy.

Thanks all. I have stripped it down. Pretty unimpressed with the stress riser corner where it snapped. Think I'll be tempted to go for steel if that is an option. How do I tell if it is EVO? It has 6903 bearings which are 17mm, a quick google suggests that makes it EVO but there is nothing about that written on the shell.

It is but the hub shells are identical- you can swap Evo axle, bearings and freehub in. Not cheap.

The Pro 2 12mm is shite- basically the hub was never designed for it, then when they decided to make a 12mm version they just used the same axle design with a bigger hole, and it's too thin. And as you say they stuck a stress riser in it just to make sure it broke. The last time I broke one, Hope sent me two replacements, "for next time it happens". But refused to even do me a discount on the Evo parts 🙁

There's a chance I still have a Pro2 135 QR axle in my garage, PM if interested.

I have a few spare pro 2 rear axles too. If you still need one please email me.
Pretty sure I have the 135 bolt in version. I don’t think they snap.

The great thing about the Pro 2 hub is the bolt up and quick release are interchangeable as others have said, so no need to rebuild the wheel... didn't remember the bolt up is steel but that's a good thing. I did this on my Karate Monkey a few years back and have had no issues...
