I have some Hope match makers for XT shifters and a pair of XT fm780 shifters.
Now am I missing a trick here because I can't get them to work together.
do the match makers only work with older XT shifters?

Got exactly the same problem, reminds me now to see if I can get them changed assuming Hope now make an updated version? Plus when you take the windows of the shifter you need a special cover from Shimano and there currently on back order so for the time being i'm used good old Duck Tape 🙂
Theres been a couple of threads on this already here and elsewhere and I think the only current solution is to re-engineer......
just done this myself, you need the new matchmaker mounts for xtr. they need to be marked m780-i, then you need to get the shimano i spec conversion kit. this combo works well
Got my matchmakers today. For new xt shifters you need the xtr mm's (they have xt 780 stamped on them).
Try Hope tech section....
There one for SRAM shifters as well.
