Need to swap a braided hose over to a standard one. Is the only difference in the hose fittings between braided and standard hose the shroud nut?
Also - how hard is it to get the brass insert out of a braided hose...?
Ta.
Yep I was planning to but having never cut a braided hose before I wondered if this was going to be a PITA.
Why you doing this?
I'm guessing for the reasons I'm watching this with interest..
Because braided is an unnecessary, ugly PITA for most people.
The braided hose his 6mm OD vs 5mm for the plastic but this is addressed by trimming off the outer clear plastic before fitting the olive. I don't know if the metal shroud has a larger hole for the 6mm vs 5mm but the other parts (olive, insert, washer and banjo/end) are all the same IIRC.
Be careful getting the inserts out, carefully trim off the inner bore of the tube or I find it easier to pinch it off sideways gently with some pliers. You don't want to deform or put any cuts in the insert.
Found this guide to check my memory of cutting off the outer clear tube:Â https://steveukmtb.wordpress.com/hope-braided-hydraulic-brake-hose-assembly/
plastic vs braided
Braided is heavier but much more flexible and less likely to get crimp damage in a crash.
Trimming it is a bit more painful
the 6mm OD is too big for some hose mounts, especially rockshox fork crown cable clamps
IMO (and Hopes I believe) there is no benefit in brake feel as modern plastic hoses are very resistant to expansion
Looks - depends on the bike. My Aeris has braided V4's and they spoil the look but I prefer the added flex and damage resistance on a FS bike so function over form.
Thanks all, sounds like it is just the shroud nuts, I've already got new olives
Why you doing this?
For the reasons mentioned, also I need to shorten it and fit a new hose to a front brake so thought I'd change them to a standard hose.
