First time fitting a headset. So I bought the hope top cup #7 and bottom cup J. Bottom has gone on OK, I think.
There's quite a few bits in the packet of the top cup #7. I have the bearing, the top cup thingy (with the hope logo on), three washers and an o ring. What are the three washers for?
Anyway, I was expecting to use my new friend the headset press to get the top bearing in. But it fits without being pressed in - it just sits there, on top. I can pick it up out of there, it's not wedged in at all. I tried pressing it in anyway in case I was missing something, but the same result.
Shouldn't it be properly wedged in, rather than just perched on top? Seems like it would be relying on the stem to hold everything together.
Apologies for rambly stupid question!
OK, so you bought a 7 top, thats a fully integrated headset, so the bearing goes in the frame, and the top is just a cover. It doesnt press in or anything like that. Whether this is right for your frame I don't know, but its right for the headset you bought.
The shims are to stop the top cap pressing onto the cup and making the headset drag where the wedge sits too deep into the bearing, although TBH I have never felt the need to use them, maybe its only if you use a non hope bearing, or your steerer is maybe a touch undersized.
Its fully integrated so should drop in - shouldnt be any play though. Lower is the same. On mine i find lower needs pressing in and drifting out but top just goes in and out by hand.
Thanks guys, that's good news. I know it's the right headset for the frame so seems like we're cooking with charcoal!
Cheers
