Trying to fit a 1 1/8 fork into a Krampus frame, so Surly website says EC44/40 lower cup and ZS44 top cup. So have the required parts but then needed a reducer for the lower cup, so got that. Was checking the reducer on the steerer tube and where the steerer tube joins the fork there is a small ring of metal (about 3-4mm tall)wider than the steerer tube. Dumb question but does the reducer just get pushed into that
That sounds like the crown race from your old headset, which needs to be removed first, can usually lever it off gently with a screwdriver or similar. (would need a pic to be sure)
That’s what I thought but on closer inspection it’s part of the steerer tube
Yes that's right, the steerer is 28.6 for most of it's length but flares out to 30.0 just above the crown. Otherwise you'd have to press the crown race along the full steerer.
Great cheers I just got a tip to put the reducer in boiling water to expand it a little before tapping onto the bottom of the steerer tube.
