Forgive this old luddite with little awareness of the existence of modern component wizardry.

What is a Hope Head Doctor?

A way of eliminating the star fangled nut?

If so, does it offer any real benefit or advantage for the extra outlay?

It is, as you say, a star fangled nut eliminator. I’ve had a few & they work well.

Sadly I’ve had to revert to sfn usage as I’ve taken to using that space for a Garmin mount.

Can't use a star fangled nut on a carbon steerer, but that's more a thing on dropbar bikes.

I use them on a couple of bikes. They work well, but sometimes don't play nicely with very thick walled aluminium steerers (won't fit in without a struggle or not at all in one case)

Also the aluminium bolt they come with is very easily stripped. I run both of mine with normal steel bolts and non Hope headcaps.

I stopped using things like Hope's head doctor after it slightly swelled my steerer,  I had a particularly tight fitting stem at the time making it harder to install, maybe I should've put the stem on and tightened up before installing the head doctor.

I love the use of modern here, they've been around about 25 years.
