anyone managed to find any way of making Hope F20 pedals more grippy?
I like the fact that they are pretty indestructible, but the grip is poor in comparison to Vaults or Superstar nanos.
I know F22 pedals have different pins, but they aren’t cross compatible. Ideas??
Are you using the domed pins or the square top ones that look hollow?
I haven't had any issues with the square ones, but the domed ones are awful
Mine are hollow I think but still not grippy. It’s annoying because they are very robust compared to vaults (which only last a few weeks in my experience)
The ones they made available to journalists and pro riders were just the normal hollow tapered ones with the hole enlarged so that ought to be easily diyable. Never actually done it but it shoould be just a case of finding a drill bit that's slightly larger but still leaves enough meat in the pin- basically makes them more "cut inny" and less "standy onny"
Will standard M4 small cap bolts fit most of the pin locations?
I think the drill idea is possible but v fiddly without a bench press! An M4 will fit but it would need to be ground down to make a thin spike as otherwise it’s too fat to grip.
Quite a few pedals use M4 grub screws I believe. Might be that while a smooth pin digs better, a threaded pin holds onto the hole better.
I’ve bought some shimano 828 saint pins. I’ll let you know!
My F20s are now 10 years old, with one (easily done) bearing replacement so far. They are indeed fantastic pedals. I use the hollow pins too. However, the single biggest improvement in the grip was removing the pins from the middle of the pedal (those that sit over the axle). This gave a more convex shape to the pedal, and now I don't really notice any difference in grip between the Hopes and other pedals I use (SS nanotech and Nukeproof).
Removing the centre pins certainly helps, still cant hold a candle to the old NP Comps, Diety Deftraps or TMACs I've got. Still class them as one of the most underwhelming bike purchases I've made
Might be that while a smooth pin digs better, a threaded pin holds onto the hole better.
