Finally decided to sell far too many mtb bikes, bits and other associated kit and put the money into one bike*

A nice new Ibis Ripmo will be landing towards the end of March and I was all set to sell on the wheels and fit my Hope Pro 4 with DT EX511 that were purchased only 10 months ago.

However a few interweb searches later found that the Ibis wheels are actually quite well reviewed and might be worth keeping over the current ones.

I don't really want to ride the Ibis wheels if I am going to sell them, so ride both and test is not the perfect solution, however I am quite a biffer at 240lb so might still favour the current wheels as they were hand built and have been superb so far.

Wheels firmly on the ground type rider with no desire to launch of drops but I do ride reasonably hard over the peaks, Wales etc.

Anybody ridden both and have a preferance or opinion?

* 1 bike is actually 2, as I still have a plus hardtail, although haven't quite told the wife this yet... ;o)

I’ve had both (27.5 versions). The 738s came on my Mojo3 and then I ran them on my SolarisMax. No issues with them at all. They are pretty light, well sealed hubs and took all sort of abuse. I really rate them. The Hope/DT combo is bombproof and won’t let you down, but if I had a choice - and I could get them for a decent price - I’d probably go Ibis again.

I’m 170lbs tho (without kit) so not a direct comparison.

I was running mine with 2.8 tyres, so the 29 version with the 2.5 WTs Ibis recommend for the RipMo would be perfect. Ibis do quite a lot of testing with tyres and their wheels. If you’re going for the full bike then I wouldn’t change them.

I have a RipMo BTW and you’ve made a fine choice!

Cheers Alex. It was your experience that made me look at the Mojo 3 initially and then the Ripmo as I knew how much fun you had on the M3.

PS. Your old Boardman road bike is still going strong, although it's a turbo trainer machine at the moment as I don't really get on with road riding.

The Ibis wheelset will be much lighter & the dt Swiss, hope set would be easier to sell for more as a more desired wheelset.

Thanks. I don't think they is much in it weight wise as the rims are similar weight bar 10g. Hubs maybe more but at the centre of the wheel it will have minimal impact.

And mustn't forget I'm old and fat anyway so not too fussed over a few grams.

I know the Hope / DT combination was thought good at the time and has proved worthy, so I guess the question should have been is the Ibis wheelset likely to be as strong.

DT rims likely to be significantly more durable.

Oh Hi @twonks! I felt the same way about the road bike 🙂 Glad it’s still giving you some kind of service tho.

I don’t quite know how you test ‘durable’ but my 738s did suffer a year very poor line choice on some pretty rocky trails without issue. And then they’ve been slammed into the ground - esp the rear - on my hardtail. Still the DTs/Hope have had a similar life and neither seems to have suffered other than some cosmetic scars and maybe a bit of a flat spot on the DTs.

2Pure are great as well. They’re brilliant at sorting out any issues.

DT EX series rims have proven to be some of the most (if not the most) durable rims over the past 4 or 5 years. Designed for Enduro riding, but incredibly popular in WC DH despite DT doing a DH specific rim. While Gwin’s tyre-less run on EX471s isn’t exactly representative of most people’s riding, it does demonstrate how robust the rim is. The EX511 is a wider version of the same rim. Both are light enough for anything but XC racing, but stronger than most people will ever need.
It’s highly unlikely that any carbon rim would outlast either rim especially if rim strikes are common - no matter what the marketing chat is.

Which DT rim did you flat spot?

After much thinking I am going to stay with the Hope / DT combo and sell on the Ibis wheels. Then the incentive to lose weight wil be strong as I'll promise myself an upgrade to carbon rims when a suitable target is reached 🙂

New bike comes in 2 weeks, excited like a school kid.
