Im simply after reccomendations for replacement E4 pads.

Hope resigns are fitted at the moment my simple question is are the Uberbike pads any good. Before I go to the Alps I need to get a few sets, I ran metalic lastime and killed rotors so resign all the way.

Not in my experience.
Tried the E-bike/endurance ones and the squealed like a pig when they got hot. The stopping power was ok but I couldn't stand the noise.
I went back to Hope standard pads

I run Hope sintered pads, the wife runs Hope organic, we're both on Hope rotors. From personal experience, cheap pads are a false economy. The superstar Kevlar that I used to run destroyed my Hope floating rotors.

The key is a really good bedding in. If I think I'm going to need news pads while I'm away, I bed them in before, then pack them away in the spares box.

I only ever use Hope or Galfer pads in my E4's after having issues with aftermarket ones. They either have poor power or wear out too quickly. The Hope/Galfer sintered pads (Galfer make the Hope ones) are my personal choice and seemingly last forever.

Apart from a single set of Uberbike sintered in the rear of the hardtail, which didn't last long, I've always used Hope pads. Sintered/Sintered at the minute, organics will go in the front when the nicer weather arrives and for the Alps.

Thread hijack. The pads in my RS4s (which are the same as the E4s) squeal so badly! Had it all apart, cleaned the rotors etc. They stop fine - they just scare every granny/dog/horse within a mile! Running the sintered that came in the box. Anyone similar issues and found a solution?

@ahsat
What's your bedding in procedure? I ride up and down my road with the brakes on so I'm applying continuous heat and pressure. Some people do hard stops but this can leave an uneven deposit in the rotor.

How fast and heavy are you and what size rotors? I helped a friend with their squeally brakes by using my extra mass to plough down hill and brake short and hard at the bottom. Rotors that are too large my struggle to get up to temperature. Disc brakes work better with definite applications rather than being lightly dragged.

Or it could just be harmonics caused by your particular set of components. Do both squeal?

I’ll be honest I don’t really have a ‘bedding in’ procedure. Probably just went and rode it. They now have 700+ miles on them, and I would say it’s got worse in the last 200-300; which is what was making me think it was wear.

I’m 12 stone and it’s my gravel bike so not super fast downhill. But happens on the flat etc too.

Think one end is worse than the other (not can’t remember which) but they both do it. RX4s with Shimano XT ice rotors.

Just picked up some GRX shifters in the Evans PSA; so will take it all off for a clean when I fit those.

@Onzadog Sorry to hijack the thread a little. Can you share your bedding in process? I always struggle so any tips appreciated

Edit: Oh! You already answered that, should have read the whole page. When you say with your brakes on, do you mean you just have them slightly on and ride against the pressure?

Related question...

Galfer. Does anyone know a reliable UK stockist and can you explain the different colours?

@johnjn2000

Yeah, low gear one brake applied as much as you can while still being able to move. Works up one hell of a sweat. You'll notice that after a while, you feel a step chance in resistance. Few minutes to catch your breath, then onto the other brake.

@sharkattack. I don't know all the colours but the green Galfers are my go to pads for E4's

I've used Gorilla green for tland Aztec organic as rear pads as they are pretty cheap. I'd like to try the Trickstuff pads but Brexit and stock make it tricky.

@sharkattack these guys are the Uk distributor https://www.twsgb.co.uk/galfer-mtb-brake-pads-586-c.asp

Scroll to the bottom here for different compound details https://galfer.eu/bike/products/brake-pads/

I’ve used both the green Pro and the purple E-bike ones (when no Pro were available)

Some people do hard stops but this can leave an uneven deposit in the rotor.

I do hard stops on a shallow hill. To overcome the unevenness issue you have to do quite a few, maybe 20 or so, but I've always found the results worth the effort. Oh, and always sintered pads.

Running hopes own sintered pads currently with TRP rotors.

Had all sorts of issues with the uberbike pads, had zero issues with the above and can lock the front if needed.

@ahsat - Shimano IceTech rotors have a habit of being noisy with Hope brakes for some reason, a few of my riding mates have had the issue. All have been solved by going to Hope or Tektro (or the myriad of rebranded versions) discs.

Last shot hoyed some years old sintered hope in that i found in the shit bucket surrounded by old grubby parts......silence. ..go figure

Got some uber sinteted to try but only one ride so far but silent

Interesting, my icetech rotors and hope (sintered and organic) pads are noisy, the sintered pads are the worst, normally until they're warmed up fully.

Can't run hope discs though as I need centre lock discs.

They do a centre lock in 160 mm https://www.hopetech.com/products/brakes/road/road-cl-rotor/

I didn't get them at the time due to their own warning about narrow tolerances on some frames. I have a feeling it would be fine on my Niner as it is a monster! Thanks for the heads up and oddly glad it isn't just me!

I run Icetech with resign e4 pads and im more than happy with power and quietness. I did run 4pot xts and to be fair the Hopes are just as strong after a bit more of modulation to stop this 14 stone manly man 🙂

Yeah having had a new set of hope v4’s for a few months now I can safely say I won’t be using anything other than hopes own pads. On sintered on the back and the stock organics on the front. Quiet and predictable. Even through the sloppiest conditions. Mega impressed. Always been a tight arse in the past but the codes on my hardtail with Uber bike pads are crap and noisy in comparison. Cheap pads are for sure a false economy.

Granted i dont run hope brakes. But i have to say that uberbike pads are the only pads ive used that continue to work well in the wet with no noise and great power!

Do want to try galfer at some point though.

Galfer Greens, their ultimate compound. If you can't get them then OE Hope (which is Galfer Red).

At the weekend I noticed Gorilla have a new pad they call Enduro Pro, and I bought some to try.

I cleaned the front rotor and did some runs with the half worn Galfer greens I've been running, then fitted & tried them.
Did and 10 or so light stops and then 10 or so hard stops with both pads and the gorilla have more bite and power to me.

I'll get some more Galfer greens and do a back to back test in the next week.
