Ok so i fitted new pads and bled my brake (first time properly since fitted 6 months ago) It worked brilliantly. Best it ever has done.

Now i was "riding" up to the pike on wednesday night and popped the bike on my shoulders to walk up a rocky bit (after the flags going uphill) and on getting back on my bike the brake pulled straight back to the bars. I rode half a mile pumping the leaver to no effect. I then woulnd the bite point in and leaver out fully and was able to just pump it back up to get it semi working. It was not good!

So went to look at it last night and its nice and firm. Gave it a good squeeze and cant see any leaks (the way it went back i thought the hose had come off or something) I took the pads out and worked the pistons and the inside ones were a little sticky but nothing too bad. Its full and its now working brilliantly.

So im thinking air in the system? i put the bike upside down for bit and couldn't replicate the results from the ride. Im worried because a) i like my brakes and b) i want to do helvellyn shortly which will involve a lot of hike a bike.

Thoughts on a postcard?

Either the bleed wasn't as complete as you thought it was, or one of the seals on the master cylinder piston is weak.

Did you bleed top down, or bottom up?

i put the bike upside down for bit

This.
My Hope brakes don't like it at all. The small bit of air in the master cylinder must move to the port where the fluid enters the piston, there are two holes in the m/c for this. Taking the wheel off and pushing the pads back in the calliper sorts it for me, if its bad.

A bit of pumpage usually sorts it, but I try to avoid turning the bike upside down.

So how do you carry it on your back?

Taking the wheel off and pushing the pads back in the calliper sorts it for me, if its bad.

this fixed it for me too

bugger!

yep, same with my E4's- not a fan of being upside down for long periods. had a small leakage at the MC as a result but this didn't degrade performance in my case.

OPTIMISE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BRAKE IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE CALIPER PISTONS LUBRICATED USING SILICON LUBRICANT ONLY 7E ADVICE DOING THIS AT LEAST AT EVERY PAD REPLACEMENT
BRAKE BLEEDS USEONL YDOT 5.1OR DOT4BRAKE FLUID FROM A CLEAN CONTAINER

Note: Silicon spray is _not_ the same as PTFE spray (aka GT85 etc) that you might use for other stuff. I get mine from a local hardware shop and it's cheap enough.

I do it but that is to prevent sticky pistons

It wont have affected your issue

Poor Bleed redo

My bikes are all on a wall front wheel up rear down

No issues with any of my four sets of hopes but the SHimano XT hate this and I have to clamp the front brake or it will pull to the lever when i want to ride it

could I ask why you bled them after only 6 months? I never bleed brakes unless I've broken the brake apart.

Have you long term experience with Hopes or are you coming from a different set up prior to the E4's? FWIW, I've found almost all hope set ups have been on the softer side- a characteristic i have grown to appreciate. I got an older M4 Mono rear serviced by hope (after deciding it really needed a proper factory rebuild + i didn't have the tools/patience at the time to do it) and it came back feeling EXACTLY the same as the much newer E4 that was on the same bike. Still with tons of modulation but more than enough power for me.

I can heartily recommend their in house services. The bleed was unsurprisingly far better than i had done at home on previous occasions. Fast turnaround too. Had them back on the bike in 3 days i think.

andy that's a bleeding issue
once bled using the traditional method
connect a hose to the calliper bleed port c.w syringe filled with dot fluid & purged and connect undo the nipple and gently squeeze brake fluid into the mc .
yes some fluid will leak out but it will top the mc to max capacity

hops are notorious for this and any brake should not do this if bled properly
