Just picked up a set of Hope M4 brakes (with Mini levers) off Facebook Marketplace. They have braided hoses and seem to be really well looked after. Gave them a service and fitted them but the only issue is they are a bit on or off compared to my old Deore brakes. Is this the braided hoses? Without changing the hose how can I get a bit more modulation into them?

What did you do as a "service"?

Braided hoses are just armoured on the outside, same spec hose as normal, you’ll not really do much for more modulation, maybe give the callipers a once over and rebleed to see if there’s any Stiction or oils a bit old?

I wouldn't think it is anything to do with the hoses.
I change my hoses to braided as these seem much more flexible than the standard black hose, and I can't tell any change in performance at all.

Maybe it's just down to the 4pots rather than twin pot I'm used to. Last time I used Hope brakes was when the Mono Mini's first came out. I had them for 3 weeks of squealing and changed them to Magura's 😀

I'll give them another once over and see how I get om.

It's not the hose. In fact, a while back Hope said there was no difference in their testing. That was when I changed back.

We're the pads replaced? If not, how old are they?

Pads might be something to change. I've not changed those yet. They look to have plenty of life in them. But I've no idea what compound they are.

Are they overfilled and almost solid as soon as the lever moves?

Good point Rick. That had also crossed my mind. I think I'm going to have to play around a little with the levels.

Friction material.

As others have said, braided hoses have no impact upon brake performance.

Change the pads to something a little more progressive. There are no useful guidelines it's just 'suck-and-see' :o)
