Tracked down an annoying creak/crack with every revolution to my Hope 30mm bb.

It’s 16 months old and replacement bearings only are thirty odd pounds. I thought they were reasonably priced until I realised they were sold individually.

Any other options before I sell my soul to Hope once more?

If you've been told they're £30 each, whoever it was is wrong. Normally about £15 each or £30 a pair

That’s what I meant, £30 a pair.

Are you sure it's bearings rather than cups? Even if it us bearings, it's possible to carefully lift the seals, clean and grease them.

Tbh it could possibly be the cups?

Driving me mad, it’s when putting the power down on the nds. It’s more pronounced when I’m on the saddle but it also does it when off the saddle.

More like a crack if that makes sense?

Might be worth checking frame link bearings aren't dry?

I was dreading someone saying that.

Presume it’s a case of removing the rear end and checking the bearings one by one?

Press fit or threaded? I've just developed the same thing on my Stache after bit too long and thinking I should check the pre-load out. May of course just be the fact it's press-fit and will therefore always be a pain...

Personally I'd swap them out in pairs. But if you can remove the seals and re pack with grease, it'd be cheaper than replacing. (Unless it's a SC as they are FOC) and should that be the source of the creak.. solve it

It’s a ‘17 carbon Patrol.

Threaded bb (one reason I picked the frame).

I’m going to be off the bike for at least 6 weeks after this week so it gives me chance to have a look. I’ll whip the rear end off, rotate the bearings and re-grease them. If it cures it I know I’m looking in the right place.

Where’s the best place for bearings nowadays?

You can get a full set of bearings for £30 from a transition dealer, well you could last time I needed them for my Scout.

I'm surprised you've had 16 months out of the originals, I pretty sure I'm on my 4 set and the frames only 2 and a bit years old.

I haven't replaced my Hope 30mm BB bearings yet, but the last time I did replace the bearings on an older style Hope BB, I just went to a local trade stockist. Mine is Scotia Bearings, and they have a walk in customer counter. I picked up a tube of 10 bearings (exact same brand and product codes), for about half the price of a single 'official' bearing. Might be worth having a wee google search to see if there's any companies near you that do similar.

I have been suspecting my Hope PF bottom bracket of creaking under load for a long while. However having swapped, regreased and re-tightened everything possible, am thinking it's a worn chainring.

Be careful on hope bearings, some have a non-standard internal diameter (24mm I think) which only Hope and Enduro Bearings seem to supply.

If the 30mm is the same as the usual type, pop out the plastic seals / washers and give it a good clean up.

I bought new bearings for a Hope BB once and it wasn't until I 'got in there' that I noticed how noisy and rough a bit of trapped crud can make these.

I have been waiting for my 30mm Hope BB from Tredz for about a month now. I only get emails telling me the dispatch date is being pushed back again. I guess they are waiting for Hope to run a batch off but no one says that of course. They just wait until the previous dispatch date to be upon us before they dash my hopes with another push out. Grr.

Strange. I've never known Hope be out of stock of anything. Which BB is it?

Always worth ruling out pedals as a source of noise that seems to come from the bottom bracket. I once went to the Hope tent at Fort William as I had what I thought was a creaking Hope BB. They said it was the pedals and they were right.

@simonbarnes

68 - 73mm Threaded for 30mm axle (Raceface cranks) in blue. Its not the end of the world. I can feel the standard RF one grumbling but it still spins freely enough. I though I would just get one in before it gets too bad. I had a BB wind itself out of a frame in the 90's and it trashed the frame so I was trying to stay ahead of the game.

@simonbarnes

I had same issue with Tredz and a PF41 24mm BB. I rang them and they seem to suggest they were having issues getting stuff from Hope - unsure where the fault lies but cancelled order and bought elsewhere.

Hope aren't showing those as out of stock so you should be able to get one in a day or two from elsewhere.
