Anyone had any problems with hope 20five rims being made of cheese? Or did I just get unlucky?
Clonked a pothole with my rear wheel (running 40mm nanos at around 40psi)
And dinged the rim... turns out it’s actually split the rim and is leaking from the split ( only a mm or two)
Don’t know whether to keep using it and hope sealant bungs it up, or replace the rim... if the latter, do I replace with hope?
I love hope stuff, so just assuming I got unlucky with the perfect connection with the pothole to cause maximum damage.
Unless others have experienced similar weakness with these rims

Not got the rims in question but I'd suggest the point loading created during the impact was the culprit & not the rim.
I split one of their xc rims before but that was my fault for getting way to lairy on it, not designed for airing out of bomb holes! I also have a pair of 20Fives, great wheelset so far as always with Hope.
I think your just unlucky in this case, contact hope though and see what they say.
I’m not really thinking that the rim is to blame, just bad luck really... just wondered really if anyone has thoughts about a better gravel rim, where this is less likely to happen.
Although I agree, I think I just got lucky with the perfect point load, haha
I think any kind of rim for road / gravel could get damaged if you hit it hard enough on a lot hole.
I had a brand new set of Mason X Hunt road 4seasons (sort of road / light gravel wheelset) and on the 2nd ride out I hit the back wheel so hard into a pot hole I bruised my toes where the bike almost stopped and my feet slid forward in my road shoes! My fault -
I was clearly too close behind the van in front I was following....although the pot hole wasn’t there the day before (winter snow/ice must have caused it).
Anyway - the rim buckled and I damaged the profile of the rim so it needed replacing (although the inner tube didn’t puncture amazingly) as it had too much vibration through it.
So if you wish to keep you’re matching wheels I’d just get a new rim the same.
But, I’d build it with new spokes. The lbs rebuilt mine with a new rim / existing spokes and I kept getting broken spokes after that until I rebuilt it myself with new spokes. Since then, all good.
No problem with my five20
I'm big but gentle. I run 35 psi at the back off road
Give Hope an email. one of my 20Five rims cracked around the eyelets and was replaced without question.
