You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I know some people would think this is a good thing, but I quite miss it, it's not totally gone - just sounds like a hub on the quiet side of normal now, but it does make me wonder if something is up.
Had the bike 3 months, ridden it 30ish times in all weather. Time for a service?
Mine went totally silent towards the end of the mudbath that was December's Brass Monkeys Round 2.
Opened it up after the race and one pawl spring had snapped, and there was plenty of mud in there. And 2 seized bearings. Easy enough to fix though - so yes, time for a service.
it cant mean anything good. Time to have a look. Have you ever pulled one apart ? 5 minute job if nothing has broken. I never used to service mine and I left one so long that a loose pawl destroyed the inside of the hub.

Really really shouldn't be time for a service yet, I mean they aren't some rubbish cup and cone setup 😈 . Though for peace of mind, pop off the freehub and see what going on. I've had my hope hoops since 2007(?) and have only needed to replace the outer freehub bearing on the rear due to corrosion (twice) and the front hub bearing once about 3 months ago.
The only reason I've had to replace the freehub spring/pawls, is because they broke when being removed for cleaning, & supposedly the newer ones are tougher.
I've had 2 pawl springs break in separate hubs, one nearly new, the other on Mrs PPs Kona a few days ago at 3 years old.
OP - you need to get that hub open before you ride it again! 🙂

And if the freehub won't come off easily, [url=
is a handy tip.
Offthebrakes, I've never found the freehub removal to be the issue (though that is a good idea), more the endcaps, especially the freehub one.
Molegrips and lots of waggling and patience are your friend.
ta gents I suspect there is some muck in there and it needs a clean, well hopefully it is as straight forward as that...
wouldn`t worry, LBS who sold me a set Hoep Pro 2 hoops stuck some grease in hub and it has , sadly I feel, been silent ever since. Quite liek teh loud ratchety sound 🙂
Well that explains where the big puddles in yogurt pots went...
Dumb mid-procedure question - what methods have peeps used to get the freehub seal back in place without the freehub seal tool TM? 😕
EDIT no worries a nice blunt metal tyre lever did the trick and lovely clickiness is restored
Nice to see a hub that accepts the inevitable and therefore makes it easy to diy service rather than exploding in a mess of pawls and minute springs like a Campag one would.
TA!!
