I'm looking at some mail order rims some of which are hooked and some non hooked yet they are both described as 'tubeless'. How can this be? I thought one needed hooked rims for a tubeless setup so the tyre kind of pops in against it when you inflate. I don't want to get the wrong thing.

I have both, either will be fine. I think the carbon rims are often hookless as they are easier to make and the sidewall can be thicker/stronger. The well of the rim and tyres you choose will make more difference to the ease of your tubeless set up.

Ok thanks. These are Chinese carbon rims. If there's not much in it, which design would be easier for me to set up (considering I don't own a compressor)?

It will be for MTB tyres. Probably High Rollers.

My understand is that all clincher rims (including tubeless) used to be hooked, then Stan's realised that you can do away with the hooked bit and save some weight.
