Need to do a bearing change on an Anthem. Can bodge a press but how do you get the bearings out?

Prepared to buy the proper Giant kit but would like to see options  before I do.

Hammer and a extension bar/suitable long thin object that allows you to hit the bearing from behind, tap around the bearing to get it to pop out evenly

That's how Ive always removed bearings, no need to be too careful if your not reusing them, just make sure you hit it out on the outer edges so the bearing comes out whole

Been doing it that way for 30 years on sealed bearing wheels and frame bearings with no issues, even used to refit them using a hammer and a block of wood but these days i have a home made bearing press

I have bodged pullers in two way

First get a washer big enough to go behind the bearing, grind it to an oval shape. Make up a puller with this on the end from threaded bar and sockets, Insert the oval washer at an angle so you can fiddle it behind the bearing then turn it flat so it sits on the shoulder of the bearing. Pull out with the threaded bar.

Second way is to use n expanding bolt of the right size to grip the inner race of the bearing.

Both are bodges, might not work depending how much space you have and the proper tool works better

Like the oval washer idea. I will keep that in the memory. Thanks.

I've done an anthem bearing change using a vice and a socket set - it's ok but awkward in places - one of the small swingarm sets is tricky IIRC. Definitely a job to take your time with, plenty of space. I think you would need a vice as several of the bearings are blind.

I have the correct maestro kit of pullers now which you are welcome to borrow if you're near Manchester.

Does the proper kit make the job a breeze?

I have used an RRP bearing kit to change the suspension bearings. Some were hard to get at, as you couldn't get at the outer races of the bearings. From memory, I had to supplement the kit with a socket or two...

How much difference does freezing the bearings make?

I won't get a chance to fit them for 2 weeks so can get them properly frozen.

Bearing puller

Best £25 I've ever spent.

Well maybe not quite the best but that's another story *taps nose*

for the cost of 12 quid i bought a blind puller from ebay for my Stumpjumper for the cost and the risk of damaging the frame it was worth it. They don't melt away in the tool box.

Bearing puller

Best £25 I’ve ever spent.

Conversely I found it was the worst tool I have ever had the misfortune to waste my money on. Two of the pullers are broken thanks to the brittle monkey metal not being up to the job and the slide hammer has a tendency to dismantle itself over a few strokes. Thankfully I managed to get my bearing change done but next time I'll just spend the cash.

Either buy a decent quality set, the proper tools or just pony up and send them to someone who has them.

Spent £3.50 in the local hardware store buying expanding bolts etc.

Managed to swap the lower bearings without taking off the rear triangle. That seems to have got rid of the creak.

Destroyed the expanding bolt and couldn’t find sockets exactly the right size.

Will get either the giant set up or kinetic before I do the rest.

Respect to you for having bought the proper tools for the job but.... my God.... a bicycle that you can't repair with a couple of spanners and a pair of pliers!

I have the maestro set-was a good investment for when I had an older 2010 Anthem and 2006 Reign-made the job an easy joy to do especially as some of the bearings are recessed from what I recall. I think I paid around £90 for it back then.Do giant still do the kits for working on their newer bikes

I paid £79 and I had the bearings swapped in under 30 minutes.

A beautiful job to do , my bike no longer creaks and rides like a dream. A brilliant investment.

Hi,

Where did you get the Giant set from and where did you get the bearings? Was it a full set of bearings or individual ones?

Thanks,

Mike

Tools from cycle store and bearings from kinetic..

The old bearings just popped out and the new ones went in without the merest hint of being on the skew.

My new favourite job.

I just bought this to go with the bearing puller spacers kit jobbie.

I assume it fits through the holes 🙂

Cheers. I'm seeing if a BB change cures my creak this weekend and then might move onto the frame bearings next.
