Been with Aviva for the past year but their renewal has just gone up by £200.

Any other companies that offer home insurance with decent bike cover worth considering?

Cheers

I'd contact them and ask why it has increased by so much. I renewed with Aviva a couple of months ago and it was only £14 more than last year..

Very happy with price and cover I recently got by switching back to AXA (I think they were the original underwriter when Pedalcover had their moment in the STW limelight)

Direct Line Select. Not standard DL. Always been good for us and cover any single item including bikes up to 10k if I recall. It is usually for those with high value items such as artwork or jewellery, but nothing to stop anyone using them.

Esure were cheaper than Aviva at last renewal, all the bikes are specified items

Beware of the small print. When I bought an ebike three years ago I actually rang Aviva to check it was covered under my bikes to £3000 home insurance policy. No problem they said. Inspection of this year's renewal revealed it now doesn't cover 'cycles with motors'. I rang up and , yes you've guessed it, I had to pay more for the ebike.

Nationwide is good, bikes are covered at home up to £1000 by default IIRC. It's possible to add bike cover for when out and about and add named bikes over £1k.

25% discount if you have some other Nationwide product, bank account or mortgage etc.

They paid out new for old (including accessories) with no quibbles when my bike was stolen a couple of years ago.

Nationwide here - just open a free back account and save 25% too...

Have a look at Barclays. I went just for the bike insurance and it was about £50 for unlimited number of unspecified bikes up to £5000 each. You just tell them the cost of the most expensive up to £5000. Main limitation I noticed was bikes aren’t covered if stolen from the back of a car, unless they are completely hidden in locked boot. They are fine if locked to a rack on the outside though! I called to check.

I think new rules come in very soon about renewal costs having to be the same as new policy prices. Will effect both prices I guess.

Well, bit of an update. Did a 'Go Compare' quote, Nationwide came out cheapest by a long way. Called them to check the details, and whilst I could insure all 8 of our bikes to their replacement value, if they were stolen from the garage, then they're subject to an outbuildings £5k total limit. Bizarre that I could, in theory, take all bikes away on holiday, and if they were nicked from the car or locked to a fence, they'd be covered, but not covered from my garage ... 🤷

Went back to Aviva, asked them to quote me as a new customer, and it was another £200 more than my renewal! Have just had to suck it up ...

I doubt that's correct. That's someone applying an outbuildings limit to another section of the policy.

Nationwide's cover has bicycles listed as a separate section, so the outbuildings limit doesn't apply to it. Ring them back, you'll get a different answer.

The outbuildings limit is something that they've brought in due to the losses on claims, specifying may also have clauses, such as being chained to immovable objects with specific types of locks, small print is where you find out if you're covered properly.

I didn't say so in my first reply, but a £200 increase would almost double what I'm currently paying!

No, that's correct, and I've fallen foul of it before with other providers. I was very clear in what I was asking, and he was very clear, repeatedly, in his responses. If the garage burned down with all bikes inside, they'd be fully covered. But for theft, it's an exclusion such that total value of garage contents, only covered up to £5k.

I don't agree. It's a fairly typical RSA wording with a ton of holes in. The bicycle cover under section 5 clearly says cover is "anywhere" with no exclusion relating to being in the home / outbuilding. That limit crops up in the contents cover which is a different section.

It'd be a straightforward argument that you paid specifically for the "extra" section of cover which says "anywhere" rather than an inner limit applying to one section of a policy to be applied across the entirety of it. Of course, if you've specifically asked the question and specifically been told the answer, then you're kinda knackered.

Would I buy it on that basis? No. Well, if it was cheap enough... 😁

We'll need buildings and contents insurance ready for when we move home, good to know Nationwide is now off the books, although does that include garages that are part of your house I wonder as our bike garage will be the bottom floor of our house rather than an 'outbuilding'.

I called Nationwide and have confirmation that the bikes are covered to thier insured limit in outbuildings - the £5k limit applies to non-specified items.

I too would call back and check that.

Bit of a thread revival as I'm going to have a search.
With Aviva plus at the moment, need insurance that and will cover £5k in shed/outbuilding.
Also need to clarify what the cover is if left in car.
Anyone renewed with anyone that's not mentioned above?

@hardtailonly, @Rich_s, @matt_outandabout

I fought RSA (Nationwide) on this exact point and won. Either they have changed the policy in the last year or they still don't understand what they are selling.

Here's the thread I wrote (scroll down to read the outcome). Worth others reading I'd you're considering Nationwide.

That's a good deal.

The one answer that rarely seems to come up on these threads is 'go to a broker'. It doesn't have a cost to you and they have access to more specialist policies. I think we're on some kind of policy aimed at people with art or 'collections' of stuff at the moment. On the current policy we've had to specify the bikes but on the previous one they were just covered in 'unspecified high value items up to 5k each'.

I just looked at the Nationwide policy as I have a bank account so I thought it might be a good deal. The bicycle cover section says the below in the What is NOT covered section:

Loss or damage to any bicycle in your home
caused by:
• theft or attempted theft
• malicious damage or vandalism

“Your home” includes sheds etc.

so even though it says eBikes are covered it specifically excludes theft so I guess they are only covered for accidental damage.

I ended up running Tesco Bank after getting confused about what. Was actually covered.
It was something like a limit of £2500 on stuff in the garage, including bikes. Which isn't great. But pretty much anything in the house. So if I go away and don't take the bikes I just have to move them into the house.

So what's the point in the cover.....? Makes no sense 🙂

@b33k34, I will call a local broker too who I have used in the past. I think the reason I left them was to go to Pedal cover.

Actually, reading it again the exclusion is if you let/rent out the property so my previous understanding was incorrect.

Our yearly with Aviva only went up by £20. Less than 10% increase. So I’m can’t see why yours would double? Did you change some parameters, or values of items?

450 per year, including bikes, in an expensive part of the southeast, with a silly overpriced house.

Had a similar experience with Aviva last week. The renewal went up by £97 with no changes/claims in the past 12 months. Tried all the rest including Directline Select with Esure coming out best with all three bikes named on the policy.

@leon

Do you happen to know what Esure's policy is for bikes kept in outbuildings?

There's a recent thread about them refusing to payout if you haven't got the proof of purchase for your padlock.

We use Aviva plus for house insurance, gives good bike cover without silly T&C , not the cheapest though.

I was with Pedal Cover for a few years, but it was so painful just getting a renewal quote out of them that I never wanted to be in a position where I might have to try to make a claim with them.

Their policy also became so watered down that they weren't actually any better than a not-bicycle focused insurance policy. I see it's got even worse, with named bicycles only, now.

@granny_ring didn't see anything specific but policy definitions say this:
Buildings/Home
Your House, the fixtures and fittings, outbuildings (does not include barns, caravans, mobile homes,
marquees, PVC or any other non-rigid material), garages and greenhouses which were originally designed
and now only used for domestic purposes and are all at the address shown in Your Schedule. Your
Buildings/Home also includes any swimming pools, permanently fixed hot tubs, hard tennis courts,
terraces, patios, driveways, footpaths, walls, gates, hedges and fences all within the same site at the
insured address shown on Your Schedule.

The thing to watch out for is when they define the "home" as the house + outbuildings, but then refer to cover for items in the "house".

PedalCover - they changed underwriters of the Excess Reduction policy they sell. It transpires that I was given a certificate of insurance - but the insurer and underwriter knew nothing of the policy I had in thier name. I found this out by trying to claim on the excess policy. Sorting it out took weeks - and my eventual payment for £200 was not from the insurer or underwriter, but from the agent PedalCover.
.
Come renewal time I was told in an email "no changes to cover" - but then sent through a completely different schedule of cover.
.
I decided that if they were that much hassle to renew with, and happy to mislead/use such a complex system of double policy to reduce excess, then I couldn't trust them.
.
Been with Aviva (and claimed) who were good but now expensive.
.
Currently with Nationwide.

Having looked at NW, Barclays & Halifax, it was cheaper to stay with Aviva in the end....!
