A hoy hoy

Have been given the green light for a bivy trip this weekend, yeah!

Not done it on a bike so keeping it local and will be heading out from Holmfirth on Saturday afternoon.

Any loops you could suggest, say 20/40 miles? And any nice spots you could recommend? Not done a huge amount of riding in that area so advice would be welcome.

I'm local. I've not bivvied around here but I'll have a think and let you know where you might be able to ride out to. Are you looking for natural shelter, epic sunrises, sheep for company, ghosts and ghouls?

Snittlegate Quarry (Harden Clough) above Hade Edge would be best place on-route I can think of where you won't be spotted, bothered or too cold. You can set up camp in the bottom of one of the quarries or at base of the old spoil heaps and no one from the road will see you and the wind won't get you. Many years of heather growth mean that it's fairly comfy now too in some of the clear spots. Not boggy either.

I have bivvied at other spots on Cartworth Moor before but they were very much "landowners permission only" spots.

Yateholme would be good but I believe the landowner there is fairly active and won't be keen on you being there. There may be a few spots around Wessenden as well, but expect bog and lumpy ground.

There's some woods above Upperthong known for bivvying at Wolfstones, again dry, sheltered and you won't be seen from the road.

Wicked, thanks munrobiker, lots of food for thought.

Not sure what I want scuttler. I'd be just happy if it doesn't rain. Well, maybe some coke and hookers but that's a given.

If you bivvy at Wolfstones there's a slim chance you'll get some Es and drunk ravers, will that suffice?

Cook's Study Hill above Hade Edge has some old walls and buildings and it's quite sheltered down the hill towards Snailsden Res (but likley damp). There's an old ruin up at the top of Little Twizle Clough above Yateholm and it's a nice ride along the edge to/from Holme Moss mast (along the line of the wall) and round to Hade Edge.

West Nab above Meltham's a great spot but cold and generally exposed. There's a cave up at Deer Hill that's accessible by bike but Sunday morning being a pastime day of the week it's likely they'll be shooting so probably not advisable.

Bottom line if you don't want to join the ravers at Wolfstones (nice little bit of biking in the woods) is focus your search on the grid squares between Holme Moss mast and the Snittlegate road junction.

There's a faint track from the back of holme moss radio mast over to the trig point on black hill which is quite lumpy so you would be out of view quite easily up there plus good views from the trig point.
