There are lots of different looking ones but are they all interchangeable? Thread and diameter are the only thing that could be different and I doubt thread is. There is only one tool. Comparing MTb/Road and the various generations of crank. Just wondering if a generic ebay one will fit or if I need to go hunt down one nd pay 5X the cost for the specifi 4500 part.

you mean the plastic thing ?

there's at least 2 different sizes in terms of diameter; I assume thread is same pitch in all versions with the same diameter

they don't do anything critical so "one that fits" is what I'd be looking for

If diameter changes then the same thread won't fit 😉

He's right you know, there are 2 types, I think 4500 will have the thicker axle and hence smaller inner diameter.

Shimano Techdocs will give you the info on compatability - I guess Sora and Deore and lower will be OK.
