this is driving me mad.how do you take a hollowtech crank off?
trying to take a deore m470 hollowtech crank off and i'm totally flummoxed .
removed the crank bolts and tried the schoolboy errors of gently tapping the arms (won't budge),prizing with a screwdriver (no chance),crankpuller's no good (tits on a bull),checked crc for correct tool (can't find owt that looks like it would work) even had a look on youtube to see how the spanner monkeys do it (nowt happening).
am i going to have to get the hacksaw out?
so come on,i know i'm a northern thicko but how the hell do i shift these cranks from hell (one carefull owner, coming to a sales section near you)

Does it have two bolts on the non drive side arm and a plastic axle end cap like this.

If so you need to remove the plastic end cap and loosen the two bolts. Some have a plate with a little hook that drops into a hole in the axle which needs removing. Tap from behind the arm with a soft mallet. If it still wont move, remove the two bolts and put a flat bladed screw driver in the slot, twist the driver whilst tapping the arm again.
If it doesn't have the two bolts on the non drive side arm, it's probably not a hollowtech crank and you may need a crank puller.

Do you mean hollowtech2 as the above pics or hollowtech on with seperate arms and bb with spindle?
If hollowtech2 version then the little plastic spacer needs lifting as well, you'll need to remove a bolt to do this.
If hollowtech1 then you need the right plug thing to amke your crank extractor work.

I think it's an Octalink crankset you have. If you have a crank puller, put a coin where the bolt was then run the crank puller against that. I believe 5p coins work, but have never had to use them as I own the top hat tool that does just the same thing.

be careful using the coin trick as it very easy to strip the threads on the chainset

well, that didn't quite go to plan.the 5p is now half the size it started out as and is well and truly stuffed down inside the bottom bracket.the cranks were being thrown anyway but i guess there's a lot to be said for using the correct tool 😥

Self-extracting crank bolts work well if you can find or beg one

Knock the 5p out from the other side and start again. You don't need the correct tool, just use a pan head bolt (with the correct diameter head).

Cut a length of bar / suitable drill bit, slide that through the crank axle, & put the bolt back in the other side.
Then screw in the crank extractor outer part, making sure its good & tight in the crank arm.
Then screw in the centre bit of the extractor till it touches the bar / drill bit, another few degrees turn & off it will come.

Yup providing you're using normal crank bolts and not the "hollow" octalink bolts, that'd work.
