I have an old bike with a 2007 Shimano LX crankset (M580). I want to use it for towing the little one's Chariot. My mate has had it for a while but it's come back to me missing the left hand crank bolt. I have looked online but it's a bit of a minefield. They appear to be unavailable but apparently you can use an Ultegra crank bolt providing the part number is correct. Later LX cranksets (M582) are not compatible (larger diameter?) and the requisite Ultegra bolt doesn't appear easy to come by either as the model numbers that keep getting thrown up seem to denote later editions which again will probably mean a larger diameter bolt than I need. Any advice/ideas? If anyone knows better than me (not difficult) or has an idea for a workaround then fill yer boots.

If the worst came to it I can order an axle adapter for use on my trigger but I'd rather just hook the Chariot up to the old bike an have done with it.

I'd be tempted to go to a nut and bolt shop with as much info as possible and see if they can help. I dont know the cranks in question if they pinch bolts in which case you might have the other one, or if its a single bolt into the axle you might need to take the bb in, which could be more difficult to extract.

The one in Hove is great, theyve helped me out a few times with funny threads or bolt sizes, and only charge a few pence for a single bolt.

I'm assuming it's hollowtech 2.

Yeah, pnik, it's the actual Hollowtech bolt which is just a plastic affair. Plenty about but none, it appears, compatible with my model of crankset!

Oh OK, the plastic jobbie is for pre-loading the bearings and in theory isn't needed when the pinch bolts are done up although I'd still want one to be honest. SJS Cycles carry loads of these have a look at https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chainsets-shimano-spares/

I've got several obscure shimano bits from there

Edit: Afterthought if they haven't the right one, a nut and bolt shop may be able to provide a bolt with the right thread you can use to preload the bearings and remove after, using a big washer to provide the even pressure required.

cyclistm, it is Hollowtech 2 mate.

pnik, I did look at SJS, they have an Ultegra bolt which would have been compatible if it was the earlier part number but it's a later number, probably for a 10 speed crankset.

However, if you say that in theory it isn't needed then I might just see how I get on without it (I didn't mention that the crank had fallen off, did I?) I'll try and what the crank back on and see how I go. Thanks for the advice.

Any of your mates got one on old bikes?
I guess if it is just for preload you could borrow it to set the preload then take it off and give back once the pinch bolts are done up?

Dougal365, a few issues there...

I don't have a Hollowtech tool

I don't have any mates with that particular vintage bolt.

I don't have any mates full stop. 😆

OP
If you could get a long length of threaded bar, nuts and some big washers, you could put the tension (easy does it)on the cranks then nip them up.

your crank uses the same bolt as the early hone cranks - the diameter is smaller than later hollowtech cranks

Oh I see, I thought you meant the pinch bolt.a 20p works well as a tool for the preload bolt.

I'm sure someone has a spare in their parts box.

Oh and petra cycles are good for shimano oarts

bobgarrod, good spot. That's exactly the bolt I've been after. Why did I not look there? However, I'll give cyclistm's 20p fix a go first. Clever bogger.

Just to be clear the 20p works as the tool for removing the bolt. I think the link above is the right bolt, but double check

Wheels Mfg do an alloy one for it which Madison have in stock. They're out of the plastic Shimano one.

Available to your LBS postage FOC. Part no is WM0584.

I got one of these for my old LX cranks that were different (smaller thread) to my XT's,

Just looked at the CRC link and one of the questions was whether it would fit the Hone crankset to which they replied "no" so that would discount my M580 crankset too. I'll probably just follow bob's fleabay link and source my bolt from there. Thanks for all the tips and advice folks, I do like this place.

*EDIT* Or I may follow sillyoldman and khani's advice and grab that alloy jobbie from SJS. Either way, STW comes up trumps yet again! 😀

You really don't need it - give the cranks a good shove together as you first tighten the pinch bolts to get rid of any play.

So if there are 2 and the other was wrong, I guess this must be right.

No - it's this one.

Out of stock though. Wheels Mfg one I mentioned above is readily available from your LBS - give them the part code, and it'all be with them the next day.

Real bike shops are worth a visit. 😉
