You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Went for a ride in the South Buxton area today but found both the best Hollinsclough descents had huge rocks dumped across and Road Closed signs. You could just about squeeze through but the farmer was hanging about nearby so didn't want to get involved in a row without knowing what was going on.
Is this the DCC or is it just the farmer being obstructive? They were certainly OK a couple of months ago when I last rode them.
Just had a closer look at the map - Hollinsclough is actually in Staffordshire by a very small distance so could be Staffs Moorland council.
The boulders have been there a lot longer than a couple of months. I reckon it could be getting on for 18, if not a few more.
Iirc a tro was placed on them due to erosion and poss the land owner having his walls trashed when a 4x4 got stuck. They allegedly drove through a wall and out via the field gate. Come Autumn this year a decision should be made as to who is responsible for maintenance and decide the classification/who can legally use them.
There used to be A4 signs up at either end explaining what was what.
Dan Noble of PDMTB might be able to shed more light on things

Happy to be corrected on the above but thats what I remember reading or chatting to someone about.
What would you have been arrested for?
Yeah I took that with a pinch of salt, think she was just letting off steam. She seemed to think that since it was closed we were committing an offence. She backed down pretty quickly on that front. Her main point was that the use of the two trails is causing erosion which has caused flooding in the village.
Yes, but it's motorbikes and 4x4s that have caused the erosion and instability.
But as you say, it's not much fun. I did one of them on the cx bike last year as a climb and it was ok, but the whole hollinsclough area is a bit poor now 🙁
They used to be nice technical challenging descents when a 100mm travel bike was the order of the day - they'd not be as much of a challenge on modern bikes, I'd think. It was me in the pics in the original version of the VG guidebook, not sure if they changed in the second edition (I know the cover photo changed)
Still pretty spicy in sections, the undergrowth was one of the main challenges on the closed bits though! Well done for tackling them back in the day.
I was out there a year ago almost to the day, it was OK but greasy and overgrown, and (one of) the blocked Hollinsclough descents into the village was too much for me 😔
Its 4x4 and motorbikes cause the problem nothing to do with mother nature then!!! Man Tor gets pretty eroded thats not 4x4 or motorbikes its walkers and cyclist Hay HO always blame someone else.
You're right, sorry.
It's basically a lack of funds available to keep it as a BOAT as it's just not seen as a priority.
...and the walkers 😉

To be fair, most of that seems to be the road falling down the hillside. 🙂
If someone wants a good challenge ride down the track from Dove head over all those rocks and across the stream that is up the road from Hollinsclough comes out by the Buxton stock car track.
Thats the one only been up it carrying MTB but did ride up it on 250 enduro bike bit hard going.

Its ace descending West - East once you hit the rocky stuff and until the stream, then it gets tough climbing out. Think the best I've done is to the 3rd corner. Its either loose after the Enduro bikes have been up/down it or wet and slippy.
Will have to give it a go downwards next time I am up there cheers.
