My wife and I have just booked a weeks holiday in Italy the 2nd week of July.
We're going to be staying in/near Verona and were looking for somewhere to go hire mountain bikes and ride for a day or 2 during the week.

Any suggestions on somewhere good to ride in that area? Nothing too challenging (probably red at most) and preferably not uplift

Cheers

Can't comment on Verona itself, we've not been biking when we stayed there.

But...

You're not that far from Torbole on Lake Garda, which is pretty much an MTB Mecca. There are plenty of shops to rent from, and there are plenty of trails up into the mountains from the Lakeside that would meet your criteria.

So, assuming you don't mind schlepping off to Torbole, I reckon that would scratch am itch!

Alternatively, the local tourist offices / municipal councils tend to have loads of materials for biking, on and off road. A really incredible amount compared to the UK.

Would be worth checking the Verona tourist board to see what they have. Sometimes, it's not online, you just have to pick up leaflets from local hotels and restaurants, so not always easy to research beforehand.

I'm sure someone here will have better knowledge than me, but if not, Google search bike shops in Verona. Click through to their websites of and see what they offer. I bet most do hire bikes, and would give you some trail guides too.

Torbole isn't far but avoid driving the east side of Lake Garda in heavy traffic.

You can do a decent ride up to Arco, see the castle then head further up the valley. No uplift and pretty tame.

A lot of the riding there Is usually shuttled and can be fairly tech, especially if it's wet. There's a tour all the bike shops do called Tremalzo which is good value. Uplifted with a hour long shuttle ride (max) but it isn't a downhill trail really. Some climbing, stop at the refugio for grappa then down to the lake shore. It starts with a climb, then you lose a lot of height on fireroad, but then it gets better.

I've usually used Luca's Shuttles, but would call most of his routes dark red or black.

Have a look at Altisimo maybe, but avoid trail 601 as the descent. Skull and Coast might be good options instead. That ride has a long shuttle but you still have to climb 400m to the summit above the Lake.

Though the best riding is in the north of Garda Lake perhaps nearer is the area around the south east of the lake around Bardolino. There are plenty of waymarked routes up in to the mountains. All the trails are on white gravel which is very slippery but you soon get used to it. The mountains are not as high as the north of the lake but this also means you don’t need an uplift. Though there is a bus service to take bikes up to the top of Monte Baldo. The other benefit of going to the south of the lake is that you won’t need to pay the toll on the Autostrada as there is a dual carriage way from Verona to the south of the lake and you often find the Autostrada gridlocked in summer.
