Having been in Spain and France for the last 5 years and with the family getting older. My wife seems up for the idea of taking the ferry to Amsterdam with my son and wee dog plus some bikes. Whilst I could head down to Morzine over 2 days I think id would be pretty boring for her whilst me and my sons are riding. She was actually born In a German UK Raf base and spent her younger years holidaying In Austria and Switzerland. What Im wondering would Innsbruck be a good base and If not what would people recommend. ?
Nice enough I guess, although I tend to find the whole Inn valley is a bit of a transport artery and all the side valleys are nicer. I presume the idea of Innsbruck is to have some more town type activities (museums etc). Would Davos (mtbs share all the footpaths in that area) or Salzburg also fit the bill? Never actually been to either so can't recommend anything specific.
We've done Hull-Rotterdam ferry loads of times and driven down various ways through Germany. Kids (now mid teens) always enjoy it and is a very easy start to the holiday (easy drive in the UK and ready to drive on continent fresh in the morning). You can break the journey in the Harz Mountains if you want a mix of mtb and tourist (some nice spa towns, walks and steam railway). Speyer also good for an overnight break with Technik museum.
In Austria we've done Bregenzerwald area in a single day drive from Rotterdam, arriving at 10pm in Damuls after a fairly relaxed drive (stayed there previously so knew the house we were staying at and just arranged for a key to be left - nice driving / stopping for meals etc with no real deadline). MTB around Reith / Kirchberg is near to Kitzbuhel. Places like Alpbach are pretty but not much sanctioned MTB.
Berner Oberland in Switzerland is pretty and lots of tourist things to do. MTB exists but needs a bit of creativity to avoid being snarled up with walkers / main tourist areas. We stay at Meiringen because it is a bit less touristy / more tolerant of cheeky trails and still handy for Luzern / Brienz / Interlaken stuff. Last time we comfortably drove back Meiringen - Rotterdam for the ferry with a very early start.
Leogang/Saalbach/Hinterglemm fits the bill. You can stay anywhere in the region around Zell Am See. Plenty of riding, lakes, pools, high ropes courses. 1hr to Salzburg.
^^ Thanks Mick , will look into Davos Would hopefully be away for about 10 days so allowing a couple of days each side for travel would maybe hope to ride 4 days .Id Imagine Leogang would be the best but serfaus near lichtenstein also looks good.
Not going to book anything just now until the Brexit thing unfoldsbut appreciate the info.
Depending on the trails you like riding i would consider Reschen/Nauders over Serfaus. Serfaus is very much a bike park, mostly manmade stuff. Nauders is more technical single trails and a great place to ride. Stunning scenery as well. Youtube the Drei lander enduro and you will see some of the trails.
Thanks Andy , that looks amazing and probably more like the trails Id want to ride . Id imagine my son would rather a bike park with bik jumps etc but Id probably end up in hospital . Looked at air bnb for Reschen pass seems pretty reasonable.
+1 for Saalbach Hinterglemm. Loads to do around there.
While I hate to bring 'that subject' into it, bear in mind that the free movement of hounds may be screwed up royally by next year.
Yup Martin , waiting to see what happens before I commit to anything with the dog. Looking at austria and the scenery I cant imagine anywhere better to walk a dog it looks absolutely beautiful.
What about Zillertal? It's only about 30km from Innsbruck and there are lots of small towns along its length such as Mayrhofen, Fügen and Zell am Ziller for day excursions plus Innsbruck is only 40 minutes away by car. There are lots of MTB routes but not that many in the bike park vein but the last time I was there they had built a bike park in Aschau/Zillertal arena ski resort. The bonus for your wife is that if she does want to ride a bike the valley floor is flat! 🙂
Thanks Roter will go and have a look . Plenty to choose from .

You need about 4 months to get the dog paperwork sorted, get his rabies booster, wait so long, get blood tests done, wait for results, get paperwork stamped.
Our little fella comes with us winter and summer, loves it.
Day card for Reschen/Nauders is 33 euros a day so pretty cheap. Other stuff to do around the area, or just down into the Oberinntal are rafting, canyoning and paragliding. Also you can nip to Samnaun and get some tax free alcohol if you are so inclined. Also if you manage to get bored in Reschen you can nip down into Vinschgau for a day riding which is only about 30 mins further on.
I am heading to Nauders later on today. Bluebird day!!!
