i need to plana route from near preston to penrith, i believe i can do this and get direction arrows onto my garmin 500. Anyone care to explain how or point me in the right direction ta

You can't get direction arrows on the 500, but you can get a line to follow, I find it quite good for road riding.
Go to Garmin connect, select the Plan tab, then "Courses", "Create Course" and start clicking along your route in the map. save it, then hit the "send to device" option.
